I’ve spoken about this before but my family and I have been supporters of Partners in Health for many, many years in their quest to open, what is now called, the Maternal Centre of Excellence in Sierra Leone. It was opened in late 2025 and started seeing its first patients on Valentines Day 2026.
This is a picture of the first baby born at that hospital and fittingly she’s a girl.
I don’t know her name but I do know that her mother presented at the hospital with dangerously high blood pressure and, after triage, became the NICU unit’s highest priority that day and thus this baby girl was delivered by C section to become the first baby born at the MCoE. My understanding is that both she and her mother are doing great.
We were only a tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny part of the efforts of PIH to make this hospital a reality but as I’ve said to my children seemingly a thousand times, “Be a part of the solution, however small, rather than part of the problem, however small.”
I’m so proud.
