Bringing together works by some of Australia’s best-known contemporary artists, this touring exhibition from the Australian War Memorial considers the realities, experiences and aftermath of conflict.

From painting and sculpture to video and prints, the works offer different perspectives on Australia’s experience of war – encouraging us to pause, reflect and consider how the conflicts of the past continue to shape the present.

Featuring artists including Tony Albert, Khadim Ali, Paddy Bedford, Angelica Mesiti, Ben Quilty and Megan Cope, 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘵 is a moving and thought-provoking exhibition. On display for a limited season at the Art Gallery at Royal Park.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘰𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘪𝘯𝘺 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 is a vast, microscopic Eden teeming with deities born from the pages of old magazines and encyclopedias, creating an exquisite collage of grotesque beauty and new mythologies.

Combining the divine, mundane and profane, these celestial creations animate a kaleidoscopic symbology that explores extinction and the climate crisis, the scars of colonialism, and the political shift to the right around the world, while simultaneously revelling in the persistence of pleasure, desire and life.

Created at ‘collage camp’ at Bundanon on beautiful Yuin Country, this collaborative work is a poetic and urgent warning.

The Gods of Tiny Things is now showing at the Art Gallery at Royal Park as part of 𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘴: 𝘝𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘰 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘊𝘔𝘐 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 with free entry.

Listen to the universe speak in waves and light 🌌

On Saturday 26 September, join award-winning astrophysicist Dr Karelle Siellez at the Museum at Inveresk. In this lecture hosted by the Australian Institute of Physics (AIP), she explores the story of gravitational waves, cosmic collisions and the origins of the elements that make up our world.

In 2017, astronomers witnessed a cosmic collision that changed the way we understand the universe – detecting gravitational waves and light from the same extraordinary event.

🌠 Blending sound, art and astrophysics, Dr Siellez will delve into how this event has impacted science. Come with us on a journey through ‘multi-messenger’ astronomy, exploring how signals from events such as kilonovae and gamma-ray bursts allow us to listen to the Universe in new ways.

Explore one artist's response to the endless creativity of another.

For 𝘍𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘴, Singaporean/Australian artist Nabilah Nordin created three new sculptural commissions inspired by Merric Boyd's energetic sketches. Curator Boe-Lin Bastian explains that Boyd's drawings were arranged into irregular "clouds", allowing Nordin to translate their "distinct shapes, colours and textures" into bold contemporary sculptures.

Working from her Los Angeles studio, Nordin embraces experimentation, creating gravity-defying forms that challenge traditional ideas of sculpture through colour, texture and unexpected materials.

See two of these striking commissions in 𝘍𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘴, now in its final weeks at the Queen Victoria Art Gallery at Royal Park.

Hailing from north west Tasmania, poet Stacey Wing shares stories that encourage connection, reflection and understanding. While audiences may know her from spoken word events, this exhibition marks the publication of her first book.

⏱️🎙️ One Minute with an Astronomer: the dwarf planet that sparked a big debate.

“Twenty years ago, in August 2006, the International Astronomical Union voted on a definition of what constitutes a planet. This resulted in the demotion of Pluto to a Dwarf Planet,” said QVMAG Planetarium Astronomer, Chris Arkless.

“The decision remains controversial today. At the time several objects similar to Pluto had been recently discovered. This led to some concern that we would have too many planets for school children, and maybe some astronomers, to be able to remember their mnemonics.”

“The definition that was voted for seemed designed specifically to limit the planets to the eight remaining known planets of the Solar System.

The definition has three clauses;

👉The object should orbit the Sun. Tick for Pluto.
👉The object should have sufficient mass for its own gravity to pull it into a spherical shape. Tick for Pluto
👉And the tricky one, the object should have cleared its neighbourhood of similar sized objects.

"Pluto has not cleared its orbit of similar objects, but then, neither has the Earth! We share our orbit with the Moon. The Moon orbits the Sun with the Earth. From the perspective of the Sun, the Moon's path is always inward toward the Sun, and it never loops or travels backwards.

"The definition also does not allow for planets orbiting other stars; these are known as exoplanets.

“At the end of the day Pluto doesn't care what we call it. It is still a very interesting place.”
