Chris Blake: Artist

Award-winning artist Chris Blake was born in the UK and came to Australia as a 10 pound pom when he was seventeen. His early life in Australia was in the Queensland bush where he did a range of different jobs from cowboy, stock-man, fencer, a stint on the railways and cartoonist (for the amusement of his workmates). This early knockabout life was characte

r building and it instilled in him a deep affection for the Australian spirit and the people of the bush. Fatherhood and work in Melbourne saw his art put on hold for many years, although he did keep up with drawing skills. In those days, it was more to amuse the kids. In 1978, he took up the brushes and painted with many local Melbourne artists and art groups. Moving back to Queensland in the early 90's he became a poplar art tutor with the newly-formed Caloundra Art Coop. In time, Chris became a well known and respected tutor and exhibitor. He won many art awards, particularly with his landscapes: the Open Awards at Maleny, Hervey Bay, Nanango, Murgon, Sunshine Coast Immanuel Art Exhibition and the annual Pastel Society of Australia exhibition in Brisbane. He has been a Master Pastellist and tutor in the PSA since 2004. Chris is best known for his vibrant landscapes, townscapes and marine scenes which feature almost luminous qualities. He describes himself as a tonal colorist, in which he pushes tones and textures to extremities whilst still retaining the integrity of the subject and intensity of colour. He is also happy to sometimes use flashes of colour which we may not expect to see in nature - yellows and green in skies, pinks in the soil, reds and purple in the shadows. These give a rich depth to his paintings that invite you to see more in the natural world around you. While his favorite subjects include outback landscapes, marine scenes and figures in interesting townscapes, he has such an eclectic range of subject matter that it is difficult to pin him down to just the one genre. He has be known to produce large and rather different paintings of flowers, birds, portraits and domestic fish. Whatever it is, it is usually exciting and dramatic. Chris has now been painting and teaching for over twenty years. He is a multi-award winning artist, working in pastel, oils, acrylics, and pen-and-wash. A Master Pastellist with the Pastel Society of Australia, his work can be seen on his website www.chrisblakeart.com, on Facebook, The Blake Studio and privately at his home studio in Landsborough, Queensland by appointment [07 5439 9558] or mobILE 0400 288 796.

I was extremely pleased and honoured that my painting which I posted on Facebook a few weeks ago has been accepted as one of the finalist in the Caloundra Regional Gallery Local Artist Contemporary Art Prize, I would like to thank the gallery art committee and the judges of the preselection process for their acceptance of my painting . Also a big thank you to all of my followers on Facebook whose support helps to keep me focus to push my boundaries. Thank you all.
Chris

I thought that I might go back to a painting I did a couple of years ago for maybe some inspiration on what to paint next. That subject was a marine painting on a small[for me ] format of a wave breaking. The thing was it was totally done with a palette knife, so while my last few have been a sort of mixed knife and brush ,this was to be an exercise in only a palette knife. inspired by my dear friend Sally Thompson who is doing some excellent plien Air work of local subjects, I however had to rely on some photos taken a few years ago on a remote spot on the west Tasmanian coast. Cheers Sally

Humid weather which seems to drain any energy out of me sort of made me drop my bundle. not good Something had to change, so I got on the computer looking at old photos , found this. A bad photo taken many years ago with my early digital camera ,[ you remember 10pix and a 5oo mb SD card ] Well up to the studio Air con on, a cold beer at hand, a nice soft palette knife, a lot of artistic licence few more beers and bingo. Think I need a snooze, or just maybe another beer. Cheers .

Still experimenting with the same loose painting technique I went from the landscape to townscape using the pervious townscape I posted a few weeks ago as the reference. Challenging but enjoyable, I will continue painting this way, and the next logical step is using it in a Plein Air painting. But I might wait till its a bit cooler LOL

I would still like to call this a work in progress as it still has to sit in the studio awaiting my final comments on it. Like most artists I find saying its finished a difficult task . However for the moment this painting will have a reprieve till I decide to sign, it or just maybe does it just need a couple of more strokes of paint somewhere?

following my last post I continued with this Impasso style which I am enjoying OK it does go through a lot of paint ,but art is all about the finished product anyway . The sad bit is that the facebook image you see does not show those thick juicy brush strokes which make the painting jump , maybe there is a better way of taking the photo so I do not loose the impasso effect . I am open to suggestions.

I hope all my followers had a lovely Christmas as did I. Now its the new year and all those resolutions we made whilst still full of good cheer. My resolutions involved painting and apart from the resolution to post a painting a week on F/B [ Thats is a bit like a bridge too far] The other one was to paint faster and looser and be dammed how much paint I use, the end result and my pleasure doing it being the main point of the painting. To that end I did this mountain stream from a photo I look many years ago and put to one side because the light and tonal difficulties , So I took a fair bit of artistic liberty with it , What the hell it the finished piece that matters. I enjoyed doing it and will work on another water scene for the next post.
ps F/B seems to darken ones image this is a lot lighter than this

Had an idea and a free hour. Now for me 8x10 This is Blakey doing miniatures . A rough try out for a larger format, I did give myself a time limit of 25mins but must confess I went over time, and by the time I got back to it the paint was dry so the wet in wet bit was not quite how I intended it to finish but I was interested about the end effect which was pretty much how I visualised it . Oh!! the subject matter, It was a photo I took on a rainy day through the upstairs window of a Glasgow bus

Having spent the last couple of weeks repainting my lounge /gallery , and those of you that know it . has a 45%pitch ceiling the apex is 6.5mts off the ground, As with these jobs one thing lead to another the result being no painting was done , I had this one on the board so I thought I had better finish it. It is a composite painting made from a few photos I took at a Caloundra beach .Its an oil on a 18x24 canvas

Many years ago I was in a portrait workshop painting a rather hairy individual. After I had finished the tutor looked at it and said to me ' nice texture and brush work Blakey but you still got him looking like a dog”. I have never done a portrait since. Well until I got thinking about it the other week. Now I happen to be a member of the Caloundra Art and Craft Association, who it just happens are having a fund raising Art Fair this weekend [8/9th November] I thought should chance my arm at a few [for me] miniatures, and support the group. Somehow the word portraits came up and thinking back to my last serious attempt at a portrait the word Dogs did strike a cord. Lucky for me I have a dear friend who has a couple of Schnauzers. So I hot footed around with my trusty brownie and took a few snaps. I painted 9 and this is a couple of those I painted all are on 8x8 canvas and priced below $150 so if you are local and live near Caloundra do your self a favour and pop around to 5 North rd Caloundra and sample some great craft work. Pottery, quilting, paintings etc all done by some very talented local artists and pick up some great unique Christmas gifts. Oh! and you may even be able to score a cheap Blakey, and by the way if by chance any of my paintings remind you of someone you know I sincerely apologise.

In anticipation of further travels in the new year I thought that it might be a good idea to brush up on my knife painting technique. I was quite pleased with the result with this 12x24 painting and cant wait to see how it works out on larger formats when in the field
