Australis Art Gallery Australis Art Gallery is situated in Kuranda, the picturesque mountain retreat, nestled at 400 metres altitude, 25 km northwest of Cairns.

Surrounded by lush World Heritage rainforest, high in the village of Kuranda, the Australis Art Gallery reflects the surrounding tropical beauty as seen through the eyes of celebrated Australian painters, glass artisans and potters. Artists represented include

Karen was born in Melbourne in 1962. She was educated at Maroondah and then Monash University where she completed an Arts Degree. She then gained her Bachelor of Education from the Hawthorn Institute of Education and went on to teach in North-Western Victoria for the next 10 years.
Karen has drawn and painted all her life, but has also spent time droving and helping with the regular chores associated with life on a wheat and dairy farm. In 1996 Karen moved to Sydney and began to paint full time, excited by the vistas and huge expanses of waters after the red flatness of the Mallee.
Karen’s subject matter changes constantly, including still life and images reflecting her former life on the land. She refers to her style as ‘whimsical’, paintings often having a surreal, dream-like quality.
“My paintings are a meandering through personal experience and recollections. They celebrate the beauty and wonder of everyday events. I use texture and a colour drenched palette to tell stories and convey heartfelt emotions that I hope engage viewers and connect them to universal themes and feelings.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF ART IN A MODERN SOCIETY
Over the ages, many philosophers have pondered about the nature and the interconnectedness of art in their search for truth.
A view exists that, more than ever, art is a medium that can serve to re-awaken or refresh our senses that are so easily overwhelmed by the onslaught of modern day living, the loss of closeness to the natural world, the fast pace of our daily lives.
Artists have chosen a different path - their journey is often paved with solitude, observation, reflection, introspection. They stand back to absorb, experience and commune with the natural world so they can in turn digest and interpret in their individual style and choice of medium. They have a willingness to keep on questioning and reinventing themselves in the elusive search for the essence of life.
Through their interpretation, we are given a chance to reconnect; not only to the great beauty of the universe, but also to a forgotten part of ourselves as an intricate part of a whole.
How many times have we been touched beyond words by a work of art?
Art speaks to us, not in a verbal sense, but it whispers a personal message of recognition, of remembering and knowing within our core being.
