Daniel Widdowson reviews The Attic Productions Once Upon A One More Time...
It was around this time last year that I read Britney Spears' memoir, The Woman in Me. Beyond the celebrity revelations and deeply personal accounts of a life lived under extraordinary scrutiny, what stayed with me was the story of a woman fighting to reclaim her own narrative. A woman determined to discover who she was beyond the expectations, assumptions and control of others. It seems fitting, then, that Once Upon a One More Time, a musical built around Spears' iconic catalogue of pop hits, should explore many of those same themes, albeit through the wonderfully colourful world of fairytales.

Curtain Bounce’s Beautiful: The Carole King Musical directed by Stuart Smith is a mixture of heartfelt storytelling, intelligent staging and creative genius.

Smith’s vision of Carole King’s early career leading up to her performance at Carnegie Hall in 1971 is fascinating in a seemingly contradictory way… The audience is invited into the intimate space of King’s home (and even her mind at times), yet simultaneously experiences the shiny lights of New York City in the 1960s. The set and lighting design/movement delivers seamless transitions where scenes fold into one another, which gives the narrative a thoughtful flow...
