If you're frustrated, disappointed or angry about Council's decision to abandon the approved Development Application for Marian Street Theatre, you're not alone.

A huge thank you to BroadwayWorld Australia for covering this story and helping bring attention to what this decision means for our community and the future of Marian Street Theatre.

We encourage everyone to take a few minutes to read the article and understand what's at stake:

This decision is a setback, but it is not the end. Marian Street Theatre has endured because this community has never stopped fighting for it.

Neither will we.

17/06/2026

Last night, Council voted to abandon the approved Development Application for Marian Street Theatre.

This is a huge step backwards after 13 years of planning, consultation, fundraising, advocacy, and community support. This hurts. But the fight is not over.

First, we want to thank the hundreds of tireless volunteers, and community advocates who have carried the Marian Street baton over the decades. Marian Street Theatre exists today because of your passion, persistence, and belief in the value of the arts.

If anything, the petition is now more important than ever.

Every signature sends a clear message: Ku-ring-gai deserves a dedicated arts and cultural centre, and our community will not let Marian Street Theatre disappear.

If you want to help, there are two things you can do right now:

If you haven't already, please take a moment to email the councillors:

Better yet, if you are able to attend, join us tonight and wear red to show your support.

The Council meeting will be held at 7pm tonight, 16 June, in the Ku-ring-gai Council Chambers in Gordon, where the future of Marian Street Theatre will be decided.

Every email, every person in the room, and every show of support counts. This final push from the community could make all the difference.

7pm tonight
Ku-ring-gai Council Chambers, Gordon

Thank you again for standing with us.

This is Marian Street Theatre today.

Owned by Ku-ring-gai Council, the building has sat unused for 13 years despite ongoing planning, consultation, and sustained community support to restore it as a cultural and arts venue.

Ku-ring-gai Council has:
✔ 207 parks, playgrounds and sports fields
✔ 67 tennis courts
✔ 2 golf courses
✔ 1 fitness and aquatic centre
✔ New $30m indoor sports facility

For the arts:
✔ 1 visual arts centre (Roseville)
❌ 1 theatre (closed)

Marian Street Theatre was intended to fill this gap.

Councillors need to hear from the community before Tuesday’s vote.

It takes less than a minute to send an email using our pre-written template:

Your email could save Marian St.

Over $1.4 million of ratepayer funds has already been invested into the Marian Street Theatre project, covering planning work, community consultation and architectural design.

A full Development Application (DA) has already been completed based on this work.
If NM2 passes:

• The current DA will lapse
• The work already completed will not be carried forward
• The project will be sent back into further review and delay - possibly forever.

This is a decision about whether an already-prepared project continues, or is reset after years of work and public investment.

If you support seeing this project move forward email Councillors NOW before the crucial vote on Tuesday.

Tell them you want action, not more delay.
https://marianstaction.com.au/urgent-action-stop-nm2-and-build-marian-st-theatre-now/

Emailing them takes less than one minute.

Councillors need to hear from you, the community, to make their decision.

11/06/2026

A motion has been put forward to let the Development Application (DA) for Marian Street Theatre (NM2) lapse and commission yet another report.

The theatre project has already been through more than 20 years of reports, studies, consultations and community feedback, resulting in the approved architectural designs in the DA. This has been the result of over $1.4m invested in the project.

This risks everything we have fought so hard for over the last 13 years. If NM2 passes, we are back to square one, and $1.4m wasted.

If you believe arts and culture are important to our community, now is the time to act.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Write to Councillors.

It takes less than a minute, but it could make a real difference.

It is with deep sadness that we hear of the passing of Tom Sweeney OAM, a well-loved figure in the Ku-ring-gai live performance community.

We will especially remember Tom as a staunch supporter of the reopening of Marian Street Theatre. Whether speaking at community events or addressing Councillors, he advocated with genuine passion, generosity and conviction for a thriving cultural future in Ku-ring-gai.

His legacy will continue through the communities he helped shape and inspire.

Our heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends, and the many people whose lives he enriched.

Last Tuesday, our community came together at the Ku-ring-gai Council Public Forum, and it was powerful.

A standout moment was Sean Clarke’s moving poem, which truly resonated with both the audience and council members. It was a reminder of how important it is to share our voices and experiences in these spaces. Thank you also to speakers Nathan Farrow, who shared his experience growing up in theatre, and Laurie Power, who spoke about his passion for the dramatic arts.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, spoke, listened, and supported. These moments only happen because of you.

We’d love to see even more faces at the next forum on the 12th of May — your voice matters, and this is your chance to be heard.

Registrations will open on 6 May.
