A Gathering of Voices is this weekend!!!

This Saturday, 12 September, three very different ensembles will come together at Wollongong Art Gallery for an evening of beautiful choral music, including a world premiere by Australian composer Dan Walker.

The evening will culminate in all three ensembles coming together for the world premiere of The Night Will Never Stay, composed by Dan Walker and commissioned by Luminescence Chamber Singers.

This Saturday, something special is happening at Wollongong Art Gallery....

As part of A Gathering of Voices, Luminescence Chamber Singers, WollCon Chamber Choir and The Conchords will come together on one stage - culminating in the world premiere of a brand-new choral work by Australian composer Dan Walker.

After a full day of workshops, rehearsals and musical exchange, audiences will be among the very first to hear this new work performed live.

From a day of collaboration with the SYO's The Symphonic Wind Orchestra Wind Band on Saturday, to welcoming acclaimed Australian pianist and composer Andrea Keller for a creative workshop on Sunday, our students have had an incredible weekend!

🎺 SYO's The Symphonic Wind Orchestra at WollCon
On Saturday, we were fortunate to welcome SYO's The Symphonic Wind Orchestra to WollCon to work alongside our Concert Band and Symphonic Wind Band students.

The day began with a special Welcome and Smoking Ceremony, facilitated by our mate Tyrell from Gaddigal Marring, before our musicians came together for a full day of workshops.

Students explored repertoire including 'The Great Locomotion Chase' and music by John Williams, while learning from the musicians and educators of SYO's The Symphonic Wind Orchestra and experiencing what happens when two ensembles come together as one extended wind band community.

A huge thank you to the SYO's The Symphonic Wind Orchestra musicians for sharing their time & expertise with our students, and to Tyrell and Gaddigal Marring for helping us begin the day in such a meaningful way.

This Sunday, acclaimed Australian pianist and composer Andrea Keller joins us at WollCon for an intimate solo piano performance celebrating original music and improvisation.

Andrea is one of Australia's most original voices in improvised jazz and art music, and this is a rare opportunity to experience her music up close in the beautiful surrounds of WollCon.

🌱 Spring is a lovely time to think about new beginnings, new opportunities and the little things that can make a difference.

Recently, we received a beautiful message from Stuart Brentnall about his son Thomas and the difference a donated clarinet has made to his musical journey.

The clarinet gave Tom the opportunity to audition for and participate in the recent Regional Youth Orchestra NSW / Australian World Orchestra project in Sydney, performing Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite.

It’s a wonderful reminder that when we give, we can create opportunities that reach much further than we might ever see.

And perhaps that’s what spring is all about - trying something new, taking an opportunity and discovering something you might not otherwise have experienced.

Last night, members of our team had the privilege of experiencing something a little different themselves, seeing Pride and Prejudice (*sort of) at Merrigong Theatre Co. It was an incredible, wonderfully creative take on a familiar story - a great reminder that sometimes the most memorable experiences come from looking at something we think we know in a completely new way.

There’s certainly plenty happening around WollCon and across our wider arts community this spring. 🎶

Spring has sprung at WollCon 🌸

Spring is here, bringing plenty of opportunities to try something new!

And as we look ahead to the spring school holidays, there’s lots happening at WollCon...

This October, we’re bringing young musicians together for a week of music, creativity and fun with our Spring School Holiday Workshops!
