In between our larger-scale projects, we completed this floor mural for our local Anglicare Op Shop in Katoomba. We love giving back to the local community and sharing Indigenous culture. Anglicare is doing fantastic work in the community, so we chose to use the 'community pattern' to reflect how we are all connected. Drop in sometime and have a look at their happy shop on Katoomba St.

This artwork ‘Sky Over Wianamattagal Country’ was created by Dr Shane Smithers for signage on the recently opened new commuter carpark at St Marys. The name Wianamatta or the ‘place of mother’s water’ credits the earth for the creek ever-flowing with ‘mother’s water’. Wianamattagal is the contraction of three words: Wiana - meaning mother, Matta - meaning a place of water and Gal - meaning people. (People from the place of mother’s water) Even when the land is drought ravaged, when the grass has turned to straw, ground water keeps the creek flowing. Wianamattagal country was and is a place of abundance even in hard times. Connecting to Country through sharing stories of place.

Collecting Yellow Bloodwood (Corymbia eximia) leaves for our first smoking of the new year. Yellow Bloodwood is native tree species known in the Sydney region. It is a medicinal tree and is often used in men’s ceremony. When used in a smoking ceremony it produces abundant, fragrant smoke. We hope that 2022 will be filled with health and prosperity for all nations and peoples.

Detail of a recent painting ‘The Divine Feminine’ by Shane Smithers - first time he has used purple! The full painting shows the landscape of the escarpment looking up from the Megalong Valley, Blue Mountains NSW. The coming together of vertical and horizontal lines represent the connection between sky and earth - this is our Country pattern.

Save this theatre! The majestic Metro-Minerva building in Potts Point, Sydney is earmarked to be developed. Arts and performance are important to the expression of our shared culture and need to be protected. Here Shane Smithers has painted it as standing on Country, and what will always be Country.

Very excited with the new sustainable commuter carpark at Leppington. Architectural design by Rob Willoughby for CCG Architects, built by A W Edwards for TfNSW with artwork by 500 Voices principle artist Dr Shane Smithers. The work represents the fecundity of where sky meets earth - the emergence of life. What a great project to be involved in.
