How do you feel about people drinking gulbarn?
“It makes us feel really happy, gud binji.”
“Some people might get sick and they don’t know, instead of getting more tablets from the clinic, they can use the bush medicine to get better”.
“We think this place is a learning place, and we want people to come and get involved”

Why vote for us?
Gulbarn Tea is on a mission to introduce Australia (and the world!) to a new herbal tea varietal! Wild harvested on Alawa country, and used for thousands of years as a bush medicine, Melaleuca citrolens or ‘gulbarn’ is now hitting the market as a tea. The community-driven business is creating new economic opportunities for individuals and families in Minyerri, resulting in positive social, cultural, environmental and wellbeing impacts for the community. Funds from an Australian Ethical Community Grant will allow Enterprise Learning Projects to support the community on their business journey, so Gulbarn Tea can be strong and sustainable.

ELP exists to foster and support grassroots micro business development in remote Aboriginal communities throughout Australia in order to address the extreme economic exclusion experienced by Aboriginal people and to enable non-Indigenous Australians to connect with and share in Australia’s many Aboriginal cultures.

Through this project, community members of Daly River were invited to explore micro-enterprise development as an exciting opportunity for social and economic benefit.

Special thanks to the Red Cross, Nauiyu Ngenbimi Wirr Tal Committee and Ironbark Aboriginal Corporation for making this project possible.

- Alawa colouring book helps keep language alive! -

Kathy interviews the team at ELP to share the beautiful community driven story behind the Alawa colouring book. Such a pleasure to be sharing these stories with our Yunmi customers. ….

Article by Kathy Sharpe for the Katherine Times

Katherine based Enterprise Learning Projects (ELP) has worked with the community of Minyerri to produce a beautiful colouring book to help children learn and preserve the Alawa language.

Project leader Sarah Burrows said the idea was born last year when Minyerri community members were drawing and colouring in with the kids.

“The children love to talk about bush food and birds and animals and some of the older community members commented that the kids were using Alawa words to describe them,” Ms Burrows said.

Over the next few months, artists from the community worked with the project team to create drawings for the book, some of them based on existing art works in the Minyerri Arts and Cultural Centre.

The result is a valuable teaching resource designed to create cultural awareness and strengthen use of the region’s traditional Alawa language.

Research has shown that reviving traditional language in Aboriginal communities has led to a stronger sense of identity and improved mental health.

Language preservation is a priority for many in the Minyerri community, said traditional owner and elder Naomi Wilfred.

“Language gives us strength,” she said.

Lil Tait, ELP Project Facilitator said the loss of Aboriginal languages in Australia has been devastating.

“It is a real privilege to work alongside the community to produce this colouring book.”

This limited edition run of 500 prints was printed in Australia on 100% recycled paper, with proceeds going back to the community to fund further language projects.

The Alawa colouring book is available online at www.yunmi.com.au and a digital copy is accessible for download at the Katherine Public Library.
