Johannesburg - the city founded on the world's richest gold strike, estimated as 30-40% of the gold ever mined. It's also the city of my birth and young adulthood. I so enjoyed delving into its remarkable story while writing SIGN.

This monument commemorates the 50 year anniversary of Mandela's capture by apartheid police in 1962. It's situated at the site of his arrest and is made up of 50 steel columns up to 9m in height.

Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years, including in this maximum security prison on Robben Island. Strangely, he became great friends with several of his Afrikaans prison guards, some of whom were later present as guests of honour at his inauguration as President of the new South Africa.
