From the 4EB archives:
🇦🇺📚 Henry Lawson (1867–1922) was a pioneering Australian poet and short-story writer, renowned for his raw and realistic portrayals of bush life and urban poverty. He is often remembered for his strong and resilient Irish-Australian female characters, especially in works like The Drover’s Wife.
☘️✨ Interestingly, the famous poem The Little Irish Mother was actually written by father John O’Brien (Patrick Hartigan, 1878-1952), not Henry Lawson. The poem reflects early 20th-century Australian nationalist values by celebrating motherhood, rural resilience, family duty, and the contribution of Irish-Australian identity to the nation’s character.

☘️✨ Another interview with Paul O’Brien, speaking about the Irish War of Independence and the events surrounding the 1916 Dublin Rising, including the fighting that took place in Ashbourne, just outside Dublin.
The Battle of Ashbourne, fought on 28 April 1916 during Easter Week, was the largest and most successful rebel action outside Dublin during the Easter Rising. Led by Thomas Ashe, with Richard Mulcahy among his key officers, around 60 Irish Volunteers from the Fingal area of north Dublin used effective guerrilla tactics to defeat a much larger Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) force. Ashe, a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and active in the Gaelic League, had only recently been promoted to Battalion Commandant before the Rising began.
