We’re excited to welcome Radical Fields to Cementa26.

Founded in 2023, Radical Fields is a regional artist-run initiative and curatorial platform based on Dja Dja Wurrung Country in Glenlyon, Victoria. Led by artist and director Ryan F Kennedy with co-director Anthony Sawrey and collaborator Gav Barbey, the organisation develops artist-led projects across installation, performance, land art and public events.

Radical Fields creates projects that emerge through dialogue with people and place. Working across festivals, residencies, exhibitions, participatory projects and site-specific actions, their practice connects contemporary art with everyday regional life, local knowledge and shared experience.

Hey, remember when Cementa had a meteor crater? And parkour? And a giant found-object orchestra? And performances in swimming pools? And a reinvented deb ball?

Same!

Cementa has been weird, funny, ambitious, chaotic and very, very Kandos for more than a decade now, and somehow we get to do it all again in just a couple of weeks.

So here’s a little flashback through Cementa15, Cementa17, Cementa19, Cementa22 and Cementa24 before Cementa26 rolls into town.

We love this festival. We love this town. Bring on September.

Kandos, photography, fieldwork, collected traces and the strange coherence between people and place.

We’re excited to welcome Gustralia to Cementa26.

Gustralia is a regional artist working on Wiradjuri Country in the town of Kandos. He works primarily in photography, investigating the coherence between humans and their environment.

His practice inspects the interference of place and people, observing how environments shape behaviour and how human activity, in turn, reshapes landscape and meaning. Through documentation, fieldwork and collected traces, Gustralia records gestures, routines and informal knowledge that emerge on site, creating images, texts and installations that reflect reciprocal relationships between location, memory, labour and lived experience.

Sentiment, sediment, glass, ceramics, care, labour and relation. Amy Parker’s practice moves through the places where feeling and matter press into one another.

We’re excited to welcome Amy Parker to Cementa26.

Amy Parker is an artist living and working on the unceded lands of the Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri peoples of the Kulin Nation. Her practice combines research-led enquiry with material experimentation in installation and sculpture, often working in the kiln with glass and ceramics. Driven by the question of how sentiment becomes sediment, she examines how affect and matter press against and shape one another.

Robotics, absurdity, humour, mechanics and the strange joy of trying to communicate across difference.

We’re excited to welcome Sophie Dumaresq to Cementa26.

Sophie is an interdisciplinary artist working across photography, video installation, sculpture and performance. Her practice brings perspectives of absurdity, queerness and humour to robotics, automata and mechanics.

Her work explores what it is to try to communicate in a universe filled with beings whose brains, existence and bodies are built differently to your own. Through new media robotic arts, sculptural installation and performance, Sophie’s practice moves between the mechanical and the deeply human.

YAK YAK YAK!

We’re getting ready to make our way to Cementa26 to teach everything we don’t know.

This September, Radical Fields Curatorial Team will parachute into Kandos, NSW with Paradactic; or: Yak Yak Yak, Art Attack — a temporary situation of misguided paths, didactic distractions, fake discourses, shoddy concepts and off-tangent philosophy, where spectators become participants.

Wander at your leisure. Follow a questionable path. Listen to the yak yak yak. Make your own conclusions.

DIY cement, knowledge sharing and collectivist art making. Excellent. We are listening.

We’re excited to welcome Alrey Batol and Sarah Poulgrain to Cementa26.

Alrey Batol is a Philippines-born artist now based in Naarm/Melbourne. His multidisciplinary practice explores the politics and accountability of material culture, inspired by prefigurative politics and the revival of commons-thinking. His recent works are grounded in appropriate technology and DIY ethos, ranging from backyard ceramics and industrial design to paper-making and multimedia.

Sarah Poulgrain’s practice draws on self-sustainability and artist-led pedagogy to expand what art institutions can do. While she produces sculptures, her practice is primarily concerned with building and sustaining respectful and non-hierarchical relationships through skill-sharing, vulnerability and trust.

Strange, sloppy, spooky, surreal and barely restrained. Very good. Very Cementa.

We’re excited to welcome FILTH to Cementa26.

FILTH is a collective of four collaborative artmakers, Sarah Walker, Lewis Gittus, Andrea Meacham and Anna Schwann, working in the realm of the weird, dark and estranged. From Gothic literature and end-of-the-world panic to horror cinema and magical madness, FILTH make work that draws ravenously from high and low culture.

Working across sound, video, installation and soft sculpture, their practice prioritises the bodily over the heady, the felt over the thought and the complex over the neat. Together, their work is weird and wild and barely restrained.
