Get to know Mel Jhey, the artist behind our upcoming exhibition "Exquisite Intangible"
Based on Awabakal/Worimi Country in Newcastle, NSW, Jhey works across ceramics, sculpture, drawing and installation, moving between wheel-thrown and hand-built forms and experimental glazing. Her practice is process-led, driven by expressive mark-making and a fascination with how material transforms under the pressure of fire, glaze and the artist's own hand.
Her sculptural work draws on deep research into ancient objects and making traditions, reimagined through a contemporary, often surreal lens — resulting in forms that feel part botanical, part anatomical, part relic.
Join us to see the work in person from 4 September. Opening night is Friday 4 September, 6–9pm, and the exhibition is open Fri–Sun, 4–20 September (Sept 4–6, 11–13 & 18–20), 9am–2pm.

The Owens Collective is pleased to present "Exquisite Intangible", a new solo exhibition by Newcastle-based artist Mel Jhey, open Fri–Sun, 4–20 September (Sept 4–6, 11–13 & 18–20), 9am–2pm.
Mel Jhey's practice explores the somatemotional connection through material, process and environment. Working primarily with ceramics alongside drawing and installation, she treats her materials as responsive, unpredictable collaborators. Her process is fast and physical, allowing clay, glaze and fire to shape the final form. While spontaneous, the work is grounded in research and historical inquiry into how ancient objects, sites and making traditions inform contemporary sculptural languages.
The resulting hybrid sculptures sit between the familiar and the surreal, suggesting botanical growths, anatomical fragments, relics and speculative lifeforms — ambiguous works that trace cycles of decay and regeneration, holding humour and playfulness in tension with darker, more visceral energies.
Exhibition dates: Fri–Sun, 4–20 September (Sept 4–6, 11–13 & 18–20), 9am–2pm

Get to know Leslie Duffin, the artist behind our upcoming exhibition Road Trip.
Over the past 18 months, Duffin has travelled extensively around Australia, and this series of oil paintings is drawn directly from those journeys. Her work lingers on the in-between places of travel: open roads disappearing into the distance, wheat and grain fields lit by low sun, and ranges fading into haze on the horizon.
The result is a body of work that feels quietly familiar — vistas that many will recognise from their own trips on the road.

The Owens Collective presents Road Trip, a new exhibition of paintings by artist Leslie Duffin.
Created over the last 18 months, this series is drawn from several journeys Duffin has taken around Australia during that time. Working in oil, she captures long open roads, golden fields and hazy distant ranges with quiet, observational realism — vistas many of us will recognise from our own trips around the country.

We recently hosted the launch of Being Patient — authors, advocates and a packed house, surrounded by local artwork and a grazing table that didn’t survive past 7pm.
It’s a good reminder of what this place actually does well: it holds a crowd, it holds attention, and it gives an event a backdrop no hotel function room ever will.

Whitewashed heritage brick. Black steel beams overhead. A wall of local art that changes more often than your meeting agenda.
