KC Rae Aboriginal Artist Using art as a medium to reconnect, revitalize & retain culture [-0-]

Yaama!

As an Aboriginal owned and run business, and an advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs, there is no place for GenAI or LLMs (large language models) in my business or advocacy.

I support Indigenous land management practices, land back movements, and respect the sacredness of our art, customs, and cultures. Using GenAI is in direct conflict with these beliefs.

GenAI steals our sacred art and replicates it without connection, without story, and without lived-and-survived experiences of Blakness. It is cultural appropriation under the guise of technological progress.

GenAI is causing rapid and overwhelming environmental impacts compared to a mere Google search or social media post. Particularly in areas where marginalized folk live. It is a direct threat to the environment and to Country.

GenAI relies on ‘data sweatshops’ that, again, directly targets marginalised folk (particularly BIPOC communities in developing countries). It is a direct contributor to colonial capitalism.

While we live in an age of technology, and it is unavoidable at some level, there is no situation that necessitates the use of GenAI or LLMs. These technologies work to reduce human critical thought and imaginative effort. This inherently sits in opposition to Aboriginal ways of knowing, being, and doing.

I encourage fellow Indigenous-owned business (as well as Indigenous content creators and individuals) to reconsider their use of GenAI and LLMs, as it the hypocritical nature of it does not help the causes we fight for.

Yaama lovelies,

A shameless plug for my upcoming Acknowledging Country Authentically workshops!

The first of these workshops was held in October and went fantastically! Peep this testimonial excerpt for proof 😉

“With their teaching I was able to construct a much more authentic, and meaningful Acknowledgment.”

I’m running two more before the end of this year. So, if you’re an ally, who is keen to keep building your cultural responsiveness, why not come along?

$40 gets you a 1.5 hour workshops, a copy of the slides, a factsheet to refer to later, and you will walk away with your own Acknowledgement of Country!

(Cost is tax deductible btw under professional development!)

You can find links to both events in my LinkTree: https://linktr.ee/misbeehive

I was honoured to hand over this piece today to Ian Roberts and Paul Woods for Suntory Oceania! A huge thanks to Arianne Martin for facilitating the commissioning process.

You’ll have to keep an eye out for their RAP to see the digital version and to find out about the meaning behind the piece…this is just a sneak peak!

Art is a powerful symbol, and I’m always very humbled to be a part of an organisation’s reconciliation journey through my art commissions. I am privileged to be able to bring our stories and cultures alive through art, and I am passionate about what I do in this space because for so long our art, our knowledges, our ways of being have been disregarded and forcibly hidden from society. I do this in honour of my Ancestors who fought to keep our cultures alive and who pushed for a better tomorrow

May 26th marks the anniversary of the Bringing Them Home report, a landmark report on the abuses experienced by the Stolen Generations. This day is now commemorated as National Sorry Day; not to be confused with the anniversary of the National Apology. This day is an incredibly solemn and painful day for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Today we commemorate the Stolen Generations. We acknowledge the pain, trauma, and harm caused to them, their families, their communities, and their nations via Government-approved assimilation policies and legislation. We also acknowledge the strength and resilience of the Stolen Generations. Further, it is a day to re-commit to genuine truth-telling; reconciliation processes, and healing.

Today is not the day to ask First Nations people how they feel. Today is not the day to ask us to open our wounds. Today is not the day to ask us to educate you at the cost of our trauma. Today is a day for non-Indigenous Australia to recognise the horror of these past atrocities and acknowledge how they still impact systems, institutions, and societal attitudes today.

First Nations Fact Friday Week 21 🖤💛❤️
The Dreaming is our connection to the sacred spiritual realm, and its stories tell us about creation, how to interact with each other, and how to care for Country.
