Ties that bind asks viewers to reflect on their own relationships to place. What binds us to home? What - or who - makes belonging possible? How do we carry our histories with us, and how do they shape the lands we inhabit?
Perhaps the ties that bind us are made not only of geography, but of memory, care, struggle, imagination, and the enduring human desire to situate ourselves within a larger story. These threads, when woven together, form the map of who we are.

Meet Alice Nightingale, a Tulmur/Ipswich-based wearable and textile artist whose playful soft sculptures feature in our IAG Kids exhibition, Make Yourself At Home. Through familiar objects and comforting memories, Alice invites children to explore the many ways we experience home. Drawing inspiration from everyday life, family traditions and the joy of making, her work celebrates the warmth, creativity and connection that home can bring.

"As a full-time maker, home is so much more than where I live and work. The kitchen is where I bake up ideas as I wait for a cake to rise. I see new sewing patterns take shape as I make the bed and fold away clothes. Every day inspiration comes from the comfort my home provides. Growing up in a food obsessed family, I find the greatest joy in the kitchen. Sometimes the best creations are fuelled by that wonderful feeling of a new recipe turning out just right!"

Izabela Pluta, who arrived in Australia from Poland during childhood, works with themes of uncertainty and dislocation. Her large‑scale photographic pieces unsettle conventional ways of reading landscapes, disrupting borders and map‑like structures to undermine any sense of fixed geography. Through this approach, she evokes the unsettled nature of displacement, where the idea of home is continually shifting - never fully secure, and always being redefined.

In this series, Izabela Pluta begins with a single photograph from her family archive and reworks it into a suite of large, abstract compositions that reflect on memory, migration and the fluidity of place. The source image - a view of the sky captured by her father from an aeroplane window during the family’s 1987 journey from Poland to Australia - serves as both a personal record and a symbolic marker of upheaval and relocation.

Over the years, our building has played host to numerous historical figures and events, with everything from royal visits, wartime dances, roller-skating, professional boxing matches to immunisation clinics. Today, the building serves as a cultural hub for Ipswich and a major public art gallery and museum.

Join Mark Tendys, Ipswich City Council’s City Architect as he tours the hidden facets and unique features of the building – from hidden staircases to the magnificent proscenium arch – which reveal this 165-year-old history.

In The World Came Flooding In, lost objects and spaces are recreated by the artists in collaboration with flood affected people. Virtual reality, projections, miniatures, photographs and sound are thoughtfully orchestrated, exploring the rich inner world that remains when everything has been washed away.

The result is an evocative and wondrous tour through memory spaces. This is a lyrical and unique experiential work that explores personal memory, grief and loss, and the shared experience of an extreme climate event.
