Distilling the quiet of the Queensland hinterland onto a large canvas.
This piece is called Rugged Calm. It’s a large-scale abstract work built on a palette of soft blue-grays, muted pinks, and deep greens. I wanted to focus on that specific feeling of stillness you get under a massive, calm sky just before the weather shifts. Trying something a bit different on the studio table this week.
I’ve been playing around with gold metal leaf as a base layer for some new landscape pieces. The idea is to bury the metallic sheen under heavy layers of acrylic, pastel, and crayon, so you only catch hints of it when the light hits the canvas from the side. It adds an interesting depth to the greens and earthy browns I'm working with right now.
