ANOTHER EVENT COMING SOON!

Dear SFNFF supporters,

For those who were lucky enough to see the world premier of The Rock as part of the Shoalhaven City Council’s Reconciliation Week activities on Monday, I hope that you found it both engaging and thought-provoking. SFNFF is immensely proud of Luke and the way in which he reimagined his Pop’s yarn and brought it to the screen, learning the craft of filmmaking, step by step, guided by Julie Cunningham, Jamie Lepre and Evangeline Read.

I’m delighted that there will be another opportunity for you and your family and friends to see The Rock. On Sunday 5 July, Reconciliation Allies Kangaroo Valley will be screening The Rock, along with Nhandi and Occupation Native.

Nhandi is a brilliant short film that reimagines the first encounters between Aboriginal People along the South Coast and the newcomers who arrived by sea – and stayed.

In Occupation Native, Trisha Morton-Thomas takes a wry look at Australia’s post-colonial history. As she says, it is not that the Australian story is wrong, it’s just that it is a wee bit one-sided. In this film, she bites back with a retelling of Australian history using humour to entertain whilst building knowledge and understanding.

Please check the flyer below for all the details. You can book your tickets online using the barcode or pay at the door.

Enjoy!

What a wonderful Reconciliation Week free film festival event!
The Shoalhaven Council in collaboration with Shoalhaven First Nations Film Festival held the screening of three short films, all created here on the South Coast. The films were:
'The Rock', written and directed by Luke McLeod Ebsworth was a reimagining
of a true story told by his Pop, Bobby McLeod. This was the premier of Lukes' film. He had some very proud family members including both his grandmothers who travelled far and wide to be in the audience.
'Nhandi' was based on oral history and written sources and imagines the first encounters between the Aboriginal People of the Illawarra and the newcomers who arrived by sea.
'Black Cockaktoo' is a film made by students from Nowra Public School under the direction of teacher Kim Buchan in 2010. The school employed a professional film maker Christopher Robin to shoot the film. It stands up today as a quality production with some wonderful child actors telling the story of how Nowra got its name.
The day began with a smoking by Richard Moore and a delicious lunch. It was a novel idea that our lunch boxes were our tickets into the theatre. What an uplifting and positive day!

Shoalhaven First Nation Film Festival held events in Sussex Inlet last Thursday and Friday. We were wonderfully supported by the Sussex Inlet Chamber of Commerce and Neighbourhood Centre.
The first session on Thursday involved Yrs 4,5 and 6 students from Sussex Inlet Primary. They got to view the documentary film Like My Brother, about 4 Tiwi Islander female footballers aspiring to succeed in the world of AFL. It blends heartbreak and triumph in a story of relationships, resiliance and sport as a bridge across worlds. It explored the pull of Country and culture alongside challenges of relocation to urban life. When asked to describe how they felt about the documentary several children said it was inspiring! The film LMB was shot over 6 years by Sal Balharrie and her team. Sal ran film making workshops with local young people at our Festival last year. The film The Rock written by Luke McLeod Elsworth has come into being as a result of working with Sal and will be premiered very soon. Watch out for updates! The Sussex Inlet students also participated in a Gadhungal Marring cultural experience. A delicious lunch of kangaroo sausage sandwiches and fruit was provided by the local Chamber Of Commerce and the Neighbourhood Centre. Thank you to both groups for making us all so welcome and well catered for.
