Breakaway Roping is one of many approved National Rodeo Association events that takes practice; timing and skill to execute properly.

All timed events ( known such as team roping; rope and tie; steer undecorating; steer wrestling etc) have a 30 second time limit except for steer undecorating that has a 15 second time limit.

Other such rules that remain important for these events is such things as:

1. A competitor must not continue to chase the calf after it reaches the
opposite side of the arena.
2. Animals used in this event are to be inspected prior to the event
commencing and any stock under 100kg or not in a sound and healthy
condition are to be withdrawn from pen.
3. There is only one (1) rope permitted and one (1) cast of that rope
permitted.
4. Ropes are to be tied to the saddle horn with four (4) pieces of heavy
duty string, or one (1) piece of builders string line, and a bright cloth of dimensions 15cm x15cm must be attached to the end of the rope.

Reasons why these competitors may be disqualified could be:

1. Illegal catch. Must pass over the head and draws up around the neck.
2. Contestant will receive no time should she break the rope from the
saddle horn by hand.
3. Roping calf without releasing the rope from the contestant’s hand.
4. Continuing to chase the calf after it reaches the other side of the arena.
5. Rope hitting the ground will be deemed as a cast.

So next time you see that rope sit into place on the calf; the horse sit back and the rope break free. Give these Cowgirls a well earnt round of applause.
