We’ve had a fabulous week of winter sunshine 🌞 and it’s already been more than a month since we celebrated the rising of the phoenix from the ashes.

On Wednesday at the Maydale Reserve, the Ag Society hosted a holiday adventure called Chores for a Cause where young volunteers came and did some jobs around the grounds.

One of those chores was to pick up the hundreds of nails from pallets burnt in the bonfire. As a reward the volunteers got to do some charcoal drawing with the dead coals, play the piano, toast some marshmallows and enjoy a sausage sizzle.

A great adventure for all involved 🙌

The Blacksmith.

Forges | Hot Coals |Heated Metal | Hammers | Fabricate |

Did you visit the workshop on Saturday of SMOKE on the Water? There was a full crew of blacksmiths at work.

Big question…Did anyone see the end result of items made? If you did, please post a pic in the comments.

Thanks to Murray from Rising Sun Forge - Murray Shanaughan for facilitating this workshop. He’s coming back to take more classes at the Horsham Show on Sunday 27th September. Book now by sending us a DM.

Mitch Wilson from Kangaroo Island SA thought he’d hit the jackpot when they landed in Horsham to find our festival in full swing on the long weekend, following a recommendation by the hosts at the Town House Motor Inn Horsham!

Mitch enjoyed the selection of tapped beers and his wife Ros tucked into warm red wine infused by mulledbeverages.

Did you sample a mulled wine or cider?

We’ve got a small stash of mulled beverage sachets as seen at the Good Food & Wine Show Melbourne to enjoy this winter. They’re goooood if you’d like to purchase a packet! The office at Maydale Reserve is open Monday to Friday for sales.

🎨 Continuing our showcase of the artists featured in the inaugural SMOKE on the Water gallery, we are delighted to introduce Ballarat artist Angela Kernick, creator of Antayjo Art.

Known for her bold colours, intricate patterns and playful style, Ang contributed three pieces to this year’s exhibition, each bringing a unique energy and sense of wonder to the gallery.

Angela’s vibrant works helped transform SMOKE on the Water into a celebration of creativity.

If you would like more information about purchasing any of Angela’s works in the exhibition, please send us a message.

Following on from our coverage this week of the art and photography exhibition at SMOKE on the Water, we’re excited to begin introducing our artists featured in the showcase. The first is Vicki McDonald from Horsham.

A highlight of this year’s Fire, Food, Wine and Music Festival was the introduction of the new art showcase, which added another layer of creativity to the event.

Thanks to the generosity and talent of local artists and photographers, visitors were welcomed by a vibrant gallery that brought colour, inspiration and a unique atmosphere to SMOKE on the Water.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing the featured artworks here, giving you the opportunity to purchase your favourites. Simply send us a message and we’ll manage the logistics with the artist.

Proceeds from each sale go directly to supporting the artists, with a portion also helping fund entertainment for the Horsham Agricultural Society’s next major event — the Horsham Show at the end of September.

A word from SMOKE on the Water’s host organisation - the Horsham Ag Society - 'Maydale Reserve' Horsham Showgrounds.

Two days after the festival, a group of life members from the Horsham Agricultural Society at Maydale Reserve (Horsham Showgrounds) were invited to view the art and photography exhibition.

These gentlemen—average age around 90—took their time wandering through the gallery, quietly admiring the work on display.

While they may not attend every event the Society hosts, they still gather each Tuesday for smoko in the workshop, staying connected and up to date with everything happening across the venue.

This year marks the Horsham Ag Society’s 150th anniversary—an incredible milestone. Among these life members are decades of dedicated service, with Barry Gross leading the way at close to 60 years of involvement.

Their commitment is part of the foundation that keeps the Society thriving today, continuing to create and host events for the community. We value where we’ve come from, and we look forward to where we’re headed next—built on the efforts of those who came before us.

The Horsham Ag Society would like to thank everyone who participated in any way in the success of SMOKE on the Water. It takes a village to raise an event and together, we achieved that.

We had a bit of fun in the wreath making workshop, with halos and wreaths all wound up!

A special thank you to Norton Estate Wines for the vines used in this workshop and a truck load we used throughout the venue for decorations.

A great collab 🍁

Sometimes the magic of a festival comes from the smallest moments. ✨

This little visitor was determined to cart around these puppets and take everyone on his own tour of the Strange Garden, funded by Regional Arts Victoria at SMOKE on the Water last Sunday.

A huge thank you to Mary French for bringing the puppets back to life and Black Hole Theatre Inc for generously allowing us to use them from last year’s Nati Frinj Festival. Collaborations and partnerships like these are highly valued and help bring even more art, imagination and joy to our community festival. ❤️

SMOKE on the Water started last Saturday with a foggy morning and our first workshop, an iPhone photography “walkshop” across the Wimmera Plains. It was embraced by the small group who attended. Led by one of our festival directors, Andrea Cross, together, they captured some fantastic images and enjoyed the unique atmosphere the fog and dew created as the sun rose behind the cloud cover.
