This work was born out of a desire to turn an everyday, simple game into a space for sacred contemplation. Seeing so many of you step into the field, touch the gilded pieces, and engage in your own internal dialogues during the exhibition has been the ultimate reward.

I am deeply honored that this work was selected for the Blacktown City Art Prize 2025.

Measuring 3 feet by 3 feet, this painting is inspired by the Qiswa, the sacred black cloth that drapes the Kaaba, a symbol of unity and devotion. In this piece, the gilded gold and silver are heavily textured, rising from the dark surface to catch the light.

Growing up in Jeddah, I visited this site almost every weekend. I carry with me a memory of my mother telling me that whenever you place your hand upon this fabric and make a prayer, it comes true. With Hajj nearing, my heart returns to that feeling of sacred connection. I created this work as a vessel for prayer, intending for anyone who stands before it to find a moment of peace to ask for what their heart seeks.

Being a mother myself, my heart aches for parents everywhere, especially those who lose their children to the devastation of war. My own Dua while creating this was for the most innocent among us. It does not matter which region they belong to or what religion they are born into; all children are equal, beautiful, and fragile. They are pure and innocent, deserving of love, care, and protection above all else.

May we strive to protect the light in every child, everywhere.

Returning to the center. 🕸️✨

There is a certain rhythm to the studio that never truly leaves you. Lately, my hands have been back in the paper pulp and the geometry, finding new life in recycled textures and the slow, meditative pull of a pattern coming together.

It feels particularly meaningful to be continuing this evolution of Mujassam Alwatan (Empowered Homeland) during my residency at Main Street Studio. Having the dedicated space at Blacktown Arts to push these sustainable materials into larger forms has been the perfect catalyst for this new chapter.

Even when we step away, the work is always waiting, breathing, and ready to be rediscovered.

It feels good to be back at the bench. 💜
