Karl Jenkins is a successful contemporary composer from Wales with an eclectic musical history. His career has been very varied and is a great example of what it takes to succeed as a modern composer.

In the 70s Jenkins quickly established himself as a sought-after keyboard and woodwind session player. You will see him credited on such seminal works as Elton John's Tumbleweed Connection, The Jesus Christ Superstar original concept album, and a key live performance of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells.

He had success with the jazz rock/fusion bands Nucleus and Soft Machine. In the 80s he began creating music for advertising campaigns and received industry awards for his work.

Jenkins's breakthrough as a composer came with the new age music album Adiemus and its subsequent series. Adiemus is inspired by world music and features a made-up phonetic language. The first album topped the classical charts and there have been several followups in the series.

The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace was composed at the turn of the millennium and is Jenkins' greatest success. It is a substantial work for full orchestra and choir that intersperses parts of the traditional mass with non- liturgical texts commenting on the devastation of war. Jenkins has continued composing to this day and his more recent works include a Stabat Mater and a Requiem. Come along to see Con Brio's production of the magnificent The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace with over 100 singers and a 70 piece orchestra. Tickets are available now.

Our orchestra for The Armed Man will be conducted Con Brio's own Director of Music Madeleine Dyer. Madeleine is heavily involved in the community classical and choral scene in nipaluna/Hobart. Aside from choral and orchestral conducting she performs as a lyrical soprano, accompanist and private teacher. Under Madeleine's direction, Con Brio has performed music ranging from classical to the recent Pirates of Penzance In Concert. Madeleine also directs Hobart Orpheus Choir Inc. and the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra Tasmanian Youth Chorale, and sings in the professional octet Sonus Lux.

Madeleine has conducted several works for choir and orchestra including Faurë's Requiem with Hobart Orpheus Choir and Mozart's Requiem with Con Brio Choir. In September she will conduct the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra for the first time. Conducting a 70 piece orchestra for The Armed Man is an exciting new challenge for Madeleine.

Madeleine's recent solo performances as a lyrical soprano include a Schubertiade with the Singers of Southern Tasmania and Dido and Aeneas with the St. Matthew's Singers. Join Madeleine, Con Brio Choir and orchestra for our performances of this very special work. We recommend booking early so you don't miss out.

What is The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace?

Karl Jenkins’ modern classical masterpiece was recently voted the 6th greatest classical work by ABC Classic listeners. It is composed for a choir, soloist and a large 70 piece orchestra. The mass was composed at the end of the 20th century, which it reflects upon as the most war-torn and destructive century in human history, and was dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo crisis. The mass clearly articulates the theme of militarism, how it intersects with a religious worldview, and the devastating effect war can have on individuals and communities.

Like many classical settings of masses, The Armed Man includes extracts from the Ordinary of the Mass: Kyrie, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei. They are interspersed with music set to non-liturgical texts selected from biblical and literary sources, including Jonathon Swift and Rudyard Kipling. The style of music used in the mass similarly ranges from pre-Renaissance music to modern classical. It’s doubtful that the mass could be used in a liturgical setting but it remains a deeply devout and religious work.

The Sanctus (Holy, Holy) movement is a perfect example of Jenkins’ exploration of militarism. In most masses this is a joyful, triumphant prayer. But in The Armed Man it is mysterious and foreboding, with clear militaristic overtones in the percussion and brass fanfares. The Benedictus (Blessed Is He) movement is usually paired with the Sanctus but in The Armed Man it occurs much later. It is the most well-known movement of the mass and contains a sublime cello solo. After the turmoil of war, the Benedictus considers the possibility of healing and a return to veneration of God. Midway through the movement shifts to an exalted mood for the Hosanna section.

Join Con Brio Choir and orchestra (conducted by Madeleine Dyer) for our performance of this remarkable work in October 2026.

Our Musical Director Madeleine Dyer often tells us to go into meerkat mode. I wonder if this is what she means.
