Our sincere appreciation goes out to all those who applied. The overall quality of the applications was very impressive, as aptly expressed in a note from BRUNY20 selection panel member Jarrod Rawlins (Senior Curator, MONA):
"It was a pleasure to once again be involved in this great initiative...We saw an amazing number and variety of applications, and as a curator I look forward to reading these every time, to learn about new amazing creatives in this country is a special privilege. Bruny is a unique place to be, and it will be a thrill to watch the outcomes from artists coming from such diverse backgrounds."

Our gratitude to the BRUNY20 principal sponsor, brunyislandau: https://m.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1025952027537589&ref=content_filter

Thank you to all those who submitted applications for the BRUNY20 Fellowship. We received 274 applications in total.

We are delighted with the calibre of work, and are humbled by the breadth and depth of quality, innovation, and overall artistic merit. We are also impressed by the standard of research on concepts relating to Bruny Island.

Through recent activity, including our residency program and now the Fellowship, Bruny Island has become an important place in which artists are able to make outstanding work. Indeed, the submissions to BRUNY20 are testament to the increasing importance of place as a pivotal element in producing new and important work.

The panel of assessors includes Jarrod Rawlins, Senior Curator, MONA; Dr. Elizabeth Day, Sydney based visual artist and part time Bruny resident; Julius Schwing, musician and Bruny Island resident (and peer assessor with Australia Council) and myself (I am also a peer assessor with Australia Council). We may also call on specialists in other fields, including literature and film, as required.

I should also add a note of thanks to our wonderful sponsor, Bruny Island Coastal Retreats who have very generously provided the funds and accommodation to support the three artists selected for the Fellowship.

We will post the three finalists on our website mid November. We wish we could offer everyone something, but at the very least, we hope that the process has helped further refine the thoughts and practice of all those who made applications, in preparation for their next project, or an expression of interest in Bruny Island Foundation for the Arts initiatives in forthcoming years.

A great article in The Hobart Mercury's arts section by Linda Smith about the $75,000 Bruny20 Arts Fellowship.

"He spends his days making music in the Big Apple, but trumpet player, composer and installation artist Sam Nester has discovered that the nature-rich landscape of the Apple Isle is also a perfect place to fuel creative pursuits. Originally from Brisbane, Nester is based in New York, where he teaches at the prestigious Juilliard School and is the artistic director and trumpeter of Bridge Arts Ensemble.
He recently spent four weeks on Bruny Island, recording music made by the local plants – and now the 31 year old is encouraging other artists to put Bruny in their sights...
...“Bruny Island is a truly inspiring place,” he says. “The forests, bushlands and pristine beaches have certainly made a lasting impression on me"...
Nester visited Bruny as part of a residency from the Bruny Island Foundation for the Arts. Residencies have been so successful on the island that the existing program is now being expanded with a new BRUNY20 Fellowship. The fellowship, valued a $75,000, will be split between three Australian artists, with at least one of them from Tasmania. It is open to all artists including visual artists, musicians, writers, performers, filmmakers, new media and multi-disciplinary artists.
Each artist will receive four weeks accommodation on Bruny Island between June and August 2020 to start a new body of work around the theme of environment. Upon returning home, artists will have several months to consolidate the new work, with an exhibition and/or performance on Bruny Island in December 2020. More details can be found at brunyislandfoundation.com. Applications close October 31."
