These Paper Trail Babushkas are paper-mâchéd in family documents and tell some of my grandmother’s stories. Using copies of love letters, arrival documents, Renunciation of Allegiance papers and more.
As a child imprisoned in a Siberian labour camp, my grandmother had to work collecting sticks and firewood. I have drawn on this imagery, decorating the dolls with bundles of sticks, knapsacks of what few possessions they had remaining, and antlers to symbolize those times when they were treated as less than human.
By paper-mâchéing the dolls, and attaching paraphernalia to them, I’ve subverted the natural order of these dolls – they are no longer able to stack inside each other… things are not as they should be.
