Some more images of beauty and devastation from the recent Bob Brown Foundation Art for Takayna residency that I was part of.

Takayna needs our protection… let’s call on our politicians to nominate Takayna for World Heritage status as a National Park, and return it to Aboriginal ownership.

Such a privilege to be involved in the Bob Brown Foundation Art for Takayna residency.

I joined a group of big-hearted creatives and forest defenders in a very challenging part of Takayna…our patch of old growth forest was meters from a clear-felled coupe. Confronting, especially at 7.16 am on Monday when the machinery started up again!

Beauty and devastation.

A big thanks to Anh and the family from Torchbearer Wines Tasmania for providing a wonderful experience full of incredible colour, shape, sound, taste and plenty of wisdom! The grape harvest is providing bucketfuls of inspiration for a new exhibition. 😊

The fish swims only where there is water. But my thoughts swim constantly.

Made of old family love letters, spilt coffee, and memories. LAST DAY TODAY (Monday 7th April) to see the fish floating aerially amid lichen encrusted branches, and ponder what it all might mean.

Tea Cup Memories: We still ourselves with a cuppa, and journey backwards, forwards, sideways in our mind.

A ghost tree stands proud and once mighty – a memory of Bronte Park and its Hydro lakes circa 1950’s. A roughly hewn broom lays in the moss – a recollection from a Siberian prison camp in 1940.

Flashes of a life and its stories, in a teacup.

These Paper Trail Babushkas are paper-mâchéd in family documents and tell some of my grandmother’s stories. Using copies of love letters, arrival documents, Renunciation of Allegiance papers and more.

As a child imprisoned in a Siberian labour camp, my grandmother had to work collecting sticks and firewood. I have drawn on this imagery, decorating the dolls with bundles of sticks, knapsacks of what few possessions they had remaining, and antlers to symbolize those times when they were treated as less than human.

By paper-mâchéing the dolls, and attaching paraphernalia to them, I’ve subverted the natural order of these dolls – they are no longer able to stack inside each other… things are not as they should be.

“It was cotton country, and to get rations of food we had to go to work picking cotton. It is beastly stuff to work with, very prickly.”

My great aunt wrote about her time as a child refugee, orphaned in the Uzbeki cottonfields.

The prickly imagery stuck in my mind, so I worked it into the central motifs of this installation. Tree, timber, paper; alive, dead, transformed into something else.
It is symbolic of my family’s journey.

To those that have asked… the smallest Babushka is paper-mâchéd in ‘To Ostatnia Niedziela’ (The Last Sunday) tango sheet music. 😊

Once Upon A Forest, Far Ago is on show now.

Bound Memories; Love Letters and Spilt Coffee.

This notebook contains copies of my grandmother’s love letters. Two watercolour goldfish swim on the front cover. Memories feel watery to me. Slippery. Otherworldly.

Displayed with cutlery, and lichen gathered from the forest floor,
I wanted to create a scene where narratives overlap, and time and space merge.
