It’s opening night! And that means it’s time to sing the praises of our wonderful director - Mel King!

An angel, an artiste, our kind-hearted leader. Mel is so supportive of all of us. She is so wonderfully generous as a director and a person: welcoming us into her home and giving us so much of her time and trust (she also makes a great soup). Mel is one of the most generous and funniest humans you can work with, and can switch between thoughtful-serious and having a wicked good time seamlessly (and both at the same time). She embraces all offers whole heartedly. She has kindly and lovingly supported us actors and creatives in every aspect of the journey. Mel’s positivity has been infectious - she knows what she wants, and makes everyone feel part of the creative process and always brings plenty of fun along the way. She also has a wicked sense of humour there! Fangku Mel 💗

Mel is an award winning actor/puppeteer working across theatre, TV and film. She has performed with Riverina Theatre Co, Canberra Theatre Co, Siren Theatre Co, and REM Theatre. Joining Terrapin Puppet Theatre in 1994, Mel has performed in more than 15 shows touring nationally and internationally. Since moving to Tasmania credits include Blue Cow, Big Monkey, TTC, Performing Lines TAS, Mudlark, Ten Days, TSO and Moggie Riot.
Directing credits include - Pedalling Back (Blue Cow), What Rhymes with Cars and Girls and 8 Gigabytes of Hard Core Po*******hy (TTC), Speaking in Tongues and Jingled (Hobart Rep), Caravan Boat Treehouse (Mudlark), AD on The Bull the Moon and the Coronet of Stars (Loud Mouth Theatre) and An Inconvenient Woman ( TTC). Beyond the Neck is Mel’s first production with Bad Company Theatre.
She sits on the board of MADE and has been a member of Actors Equity since 1991.

Hello friends. Today Tasmania has been debating the most significant changes to fi****ms legislation in decades, and community safety, individual rights, and the legacy of past tragedies are once again at the centre of public conversation.

Currently the vote is split on tighter restrictions.

Here are some of the proposed reforms we know about: tighter restrictions on some fi****ms, stronger penalties for gun theft and alignment with national fi****ms reforms. And debate continues over measures such as limits on the number of fi****ms individuals can own.

For Tasmanians, I think we’re all aware that discussions about gun laws are never purely political. They exist in the shadow of the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, which forever changed our state in more ways than can be possibly said.

Working on this play, we’ve been thinking so much about the lives of ordinary people living with its aftermath. Still to this day carrying the grief, memory, resilience. And we’ve been thinking, too, so much about the ways communities carry collective trauma long after the headlines taper out.

As legislators, advocates, fi***rm owners and community members continue to debate what reforms will happen, we just wanted to remind folks why these conversations matter: people with real experiences, people who are not forgotten.
