“Simon Reade’s Sonata for Strings certainly deserves more frequent outings; this was the first performance since the première in May 2008. Opening here with Damien Holloway’s viola solo, the music steadily builds to its depiction of a thunderstorm across Bass Strait as witnessed at Devonport in 2007. The piece is memorable for the way it skilfully blends a convincing sense of musical structure with the programmatic elements. The conductor inspired carefully prepared, controlled and beautifully balanced results.” Peter Donnelly 24/5/2026
