Despard Gallery

Despard Gallery Despard Gallery represents Tasmanian, National and international artists. Established in 1985 on Despard Street, Hobart.

Despard Gallery has been an established commercial art space in Hobart, Tasmania for 30 years. Throughout this time the gallery has lead the way for contemporary arts practice through an extensive exhibition program, including large scale international exhibitions in New York and Chicago. With this extensive history and experience Despard is set to realise a fresh new vision in a new, purpose-buil

t above the original gallery in historic, central Hobart. In collaboration with Field Labs architect, James Wilson, Despard Gallery has designed a world-class exhibition space to present the best of Tasmanian art. Originally constructed in 1837 and sensitively restored using modern industrial fittings and finishes, the design has preserved many of the original markings from the convict nails to vintage graffiti. The new exhibition space represents a shift in vision. Through a monthly exhibition program of contemporary art, Despard strives to create an art experience that is stimulating, relevant and reflective of Australian creative culture while not shying away from topical issues. Gallery Director, Steven Joyce is passionate about art and offers discerning advice through the market with confidence. The gallery delivers a highly personalised approach that draws on well-established relationships with artists and curators. Despard aims to deliver the most desirable and highest quality works from both established and emerging artists nationally and internationally. The gallery will now be able to offer the creative community a unique venue to hire, valuations of modern works of art, furniture and design objects. For years, Steven has also offered private art consultancy for businesses and individuals, a personalised service offered to clients with a specified outcome in mind.

O P E N I N G T O N I G H T Despard Gallery is pleased to invite you to a special Opening Event Tonight (Friday 5 June) to help celebrate the launch of Night Citrus, the highly anticipated third solo exhibition by early career Tasmanian artist Maggie May Jeffries.
Special performance of original song by Nicole Farrow, written in response to the exhibition.
‘My fixation with painting plants comes from my sense of wonder, originating in my childhood. From a smaller version of mewho loved looking and collecting. In this way I, unlike plants, have not changed at all. The changes in plants happen slowly andtake time. In some of these paintings I have chosen to include more than one image of the same plant in different stages ofmetamorphosis, stitched together as if the plants are growing as I paint them. I use these paintings to document my curiosity in plants, sensory experience and the complicated nature of memory.’ – Maggie May Jeffries
Now available to view in full online via our website. Exhibition concludes Saturday 27 June.

O N V I E W With our latest install all wrapped up, we are excited to open ‘Night Citrus’, the highly anticipated third solo exhibition by Tasmanian artist Maggie May Jeffries.
Unique to the creation of these new works has been a more intuitive painting process, described by Jeffries as ‘rewilding’. Here, compositions are allowed to evolve more naturally, Jeffries embracing the organic nature of painting. Jeffries defines the evolution of these paintings as living forms, with plants and memories continually layered over many months. These works don’t just reflect the beauty in the natural world and how it can be reimagined, it also represents an evolution in Jeffries’ practice, one that embraces the freedom of a more organic path, of autonomous growth and deeper connections.
Please join us for an Opening Event this Friday 5 June from 5:30 pm to congratulate Maggie on another standout body of work.

Underpinning Jeffries’ new suite of botanical based paintings is an intimate observation of details found in our natural world. Through exquisitely layered surfaces, each work traces Jeffries’ personal fascination with plants and flowers, recalling the sensation of personal experience through a shared sense of wonder. Magnifying each subject many times their original size, reveals an intricate world of unseen beauty and the awe of childhood curiosity.
Maggie May Jeffries is an early career artist based in nipaluna/Hobart, lutruwita/Tasmania. Jeffries studied Fine Art and Psychology at the University of Tasmania, graduating with first class honours in 2022. Jeffries has completed artist residencies on King Island, Queenstown, Glover Country and Clifton Beach, as well as at the Rosamond McCulloch studio at the Cité des Arts Internationale, Paris. L A S T W E E K Make sure you drop by the gallery and not to miss the amazing solo exhibi-tion by emerging Tasmanian artist Rosanagh May!
Underpinning May’s first major exhibition is a celebration of the ballads and storytelling of coun-try and western. May’s work gives a nod to how country music has evolved, from closed tradition to being inclusive and a new form of expression. With multipiece spires, a giant charm bracelet, lucky horseshoes and hanging bridle ornaments (complete with snaffle bits), the exhibition demonstrates a similar evolution within ceramics. A medi-um that remains grounded in the modesty of craft, yet reframed and modelled into a contemporary language with renewed relevance.
Make sure you drop by the gallery to see this exhibition person or view in full inline now, in-cluding a comprehensive exhibition flipbook catalogue with exhibition text and insights by Rosanagh about the songs that have inspired each work.
Please note gallery hours for Saturday 25 April (ANZAC day) 12noon – 4 pm
Exhibition continues through til Saturday 2 May.
