Day 2 of learning wildlife photography

Urgh, autofocus, why are you always so interested in the branches AROUND the thing I’m looking at??

Some cute-but-not-quite-in-focus silvereyes, and an eastern spinebill enjoying the jasmine was my first bird in flight! An accident, but I’m claiming it 😄

🏡 I didn’t go far this time - I took these from my back deck. A very convenient way to practice, but it also meant I was pointing a large-ish lens into next door’s garden… 👀

🤔 How do I do this without looking like a creepy stalker??

Now
🖤Piyura

I’m so pleased to see the traditional Palawa Kani name for these guys (piyura - pee-you-ra) is coming back into circulation.

🪶 Piyura are an endemic species of rail found only in Tasmania and its offshore islands. They often live in small family groups, with parents caring for chicks for up to 8 weeks.

🏃‍♀️ They’re flightless, but have powerful legs and can run at speeds of up to 50km/h.

🌿 I love watching them going about their business during my lunch break - there’s a lovely rivulet and walking track near my work. They’ll be seemingly calm, foraging in the grass, then suddenly they’ll be madly chasing intruders or each other!

What’s better than one fluffy little chick?

Three! 🐦🐦🐦

Tasmanian native hens are sometimes called “turbo chooks” - did you know they can run at speeds of up to 50km/h? Look at the legs on these little babies!
🏃🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

The name is funny, but I think they deserve better - native hens are endemic to Tasmania and have been around for thousands of years, long before European settlers gave them silly names. They’re very successful and doting parents too 🥰

I recently learned their indigenous name is “piyura” (pee-you-ra) which seems much more appropriate! What do you think?

From Wild Island:

BIRDS is a celebration of Tasmanian bird-life from Wild Island artists. From the diminutive to the bold, from the flightless, to the aeronauts of the sky. Imagining a world without birds is a devastating idea, however, roughly 1.4% of known bird species are now extinct and about one in eight (12.8%) are currently threatened with global extinction. Driven primarily by human activities like habitat loss, around 1,400 species have been lost in modern history. Experts warn that without intervention, one-third of bird species could vanish by 2100.
