Art has a way of finding us, even in the middle of the outback.

Today was another day spent immersed in creativity, surrounded not by the walls of a studio but by the wide-open landscape of Evelyn Downs. As artists volunteering as caretakers, we've traded canvases for aluminium signs, yet the process remains the same—careful planning, thoughtful composition, steady brushstrokes, and a vision slowly coming to life.

The three of us spent the day painting the larger feature signs that will soon become part of the homestead, each layer adding colour, character, and a sense of place. It's will incredibly rewarding knowing our art will greet visitors, tell stories, and become part of the everyday life of this remarkable property.

Art isn't always about creating something to hang on a wall. Sometimes it's about using creativity to serve a community, preserve a place, and leave behind something both beautiful and practical.

As we put the finishing touches on these signs, we're reminded that every brushstroke carries a little piece of the artist with it. It's a privilege to leave that piece here, in the heart of the Australian outback.

The Artists in Residence

Another muddy day at the homestead meant the tracks remained closed to vehicles, so our world stayed close to home. While we couldn't head out into the landscape, we found ourselves immersed in a different kind of creative journey.

With the winter chill settling in, the three of us gathered around the warmth of the indoor fire and continued working on our homestead sign project. What began as a practical task has evolved into something much more meaningful. Each sign carries a little piece of all three artists. Together we're creating something that is both functional and personal, leaving behind small works of art that will welcome and guide future visitors.

I love how our creativity isn't confined to a canvas. Sometimes it lives in collaboration, in shared conversations by the fire, in the careful brushstroke on an aluminium sign, or in the practical work of improving a place for those who will come after us.

Even though the rain kept us close to the homestead, it gifted us something just as valuable—time to create together, to share our individual talents, and to leave a small artistic legacy woven into the heart of this remarkable landscape.

Rain kept us close to the homestead today, giving us the perfect opportunity to continue working on our sign project for Evelyn Downs.

My focus was creating and refining the decorative border that will tie all of the signs together, inspired by the design elements from Bush Heritage's business cards.

Linda designed the font, creating a style that perfectly complements the character of the homestead, while Lyn Johnston carefully hand-painted the lettering, bringing each sign to life with remarkable precision and skill.

Linda Galligan also began illustrating several of the signs, adding beautiful hand-painted artwork that will make each one truly unique.

As artists, it's such a privilege to contribute our creativity in a practical way while volunteering as caretakers. Seeing these signs slowly take shape is incredibly rewarding.

A rainy day at Evelyn Downs meant a change of plans, but also a wonderful opportunity to be creative.

With 3.8 mm of overnight rain, the tracks quickly became too boggy to drive, so we spent the day at the homestead. As artists volunteering as caretakers, we were able to begin a new project: creating signs for around the property.

Today was all about the first steps; planning the designs, cutting the aluminium flashing, cleaning the surfaces and applying the first coat of paint. It's exciting to see the project begin to take shape and a lovely way to use our artistic skills in a practical setting.

One of the things I love most about volunteering is that creativity can find a place anywhere, even in the heart of the Australian outback. I'm looking forward to sharing the next stages as the signs come to life.

There’s something very special about sharing a studio space with friends who are artists, even if our “studio” happens to be travelling across the Australian outback.

With all three of us preparing for upcoming exhibitions, we’ve found ourselves stealing little pockets of time throughout the day; before sunrise, during a rain shower, or whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Our art isn’t always made in perfect conditions. Sometimes it’s made between chores, over cups of tea, with muddy boots by the door and friends painting quietly alongside you.

The conversations, encouragement, shared inspiration, and creative energy make every painting session feel like a gift. And while the landscapes around us are breathtaking, I think it’s the experience of creating together that I’ll remember just as much.

Art has a way of finding time, no matter where the journey leads. ✨️

A New Chapter Begins

Today was the day we have been looking forward to for such a long time.

After enjoying morning tea in Coober Pedy, we pointed the car north and travelled 218km along the incredible Painted Desert Road. The colours of the landscape seemed to change with every kilometre; rich reds, soft ochres, creamy whites and golden yellows stretching to the horizon.

This afternoon, we arrived at Evelyn Downs, the place that will be home for the next few weeks as we begin our role as caretakers.

Evelyn Downs is an extraordinary place. Covering almost 235,000 hectares; an area close to the size of the Australian Capital Territory. Up until 2024, it was a working cattle station and is now Bush Heritage Australia's largest reserve.

The property protects spectacular Painted Desert landscapes, ancient creek systems, and habitat for dozens of rare and threatened plants and animals, while also holding deep cultural significance for the Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara and Yankunytjatjara people.

Knowing that this remarkable landscape is being restored and cared for for future generations makes us feel incredibly privileged to play even a small part in its story.

We've unpacked, settled into our new house, and are soaking in the silence and the endless outback sky.

Tomorrow morning our induction begins, and we can't wait to discover what adventures, challenges and special moments await us over the coming weeks.

Coober Pedy

Today was our second day exploring the fascinating underground town of Coober Pedy.

After breakfast, we headed into town for a relaxed morning, enjoying morning tea at a local café before wandering through an underground art gallery, browsing opal shops, exploring an underground museum, and picking up a few treasures along the way.

Back at Riba's, we shared lunch together and spent a wonderfully lazy afternoon playing cards in the cool comfort of the underground living area.

As the day drew to a close, we climbed one of the hills to watch another vast outback sunset. From there, we finished the evening with dinner in an underground hotel; a fitting end to another memorable day.

Some days are made for slowing down.

After wandering the friendly streets of Kimba and soaking up its welcoming country charm, we set off across the endless outback, stopping for morning tea with the Flinders Ranges as our backdrop.

Nearly 400 kilometres of ever-changing colours, textures and wide-open skies proved that even the most expansive landscapes never stand still. The perfect inspiration for an afternoon spent painting at Wirraminna Homestead, finishing the day with a glowing sunset, a glass of wine and good company.

As artists, we often think we know what we'll create each day. Today, I had every intention of setting up my paints, but instead I chose to follow curiosity.

A quirky inland jetty at Wirrulla, the sweeping curves of the ancient granite Pildappa Rock, and the beautifully crafted Manning sculptures near Kimba, reminded me that inspiration doesn't always come from the studio. Sometimes it comes from changing direction, slowing down and simply seeing.

Every unexpected detour adds another layer to the canvas we're painting within ourselves. 🤍
