It's great to hear our HBRG touring exhibition 'Cane' is featured on Radio National!

Bringing local stories into dialogue with international perspectives, this exhibition makes connections between agricultural and labour practices across colonies of the British Empire in the 19th Century.

Through a process of truth-telling and creative exchange, Cane celebrates the enduring spirit and cultural legacy of Australian South Sea Islanders in the Fraser Coast.

Visitors are flocking to the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery as two significant new exhibitions invite residents and tourists alike to explore the rich cultural heritage of the Fraser Coast region.

The exhibitions provide an opportunity for people of all ages to engage with stories that connect the past, present and future. Through artwork, storytelling and creative interpretation, visitors are encouraged to reflect on the region's unique identity and the enduring relationship between people and Country.

Teachers and community organisations have already begun arranging group visits, recognising the educational value of the displays. Gallery staff say interest has exceeded expectations, with strong attendance recorded during opening weeks.

Community members have praised the exhibitions for encouraging meaningful conversations about local history while also celebrating creativity and cultural knowledge.

The displays feature a range of artistic styles and perspectives, allowing visitors to experience both traditional and contemporary interpretations of life on the Fraser Coast.

Local tourism operators believe cultural attractions such as these play an increasingly important role in attracting visitors seeking experiences beyond beaches and outdoor recreation.

Gallery representatives hope the exhibitions will inspire ongoing dialogue, greater cultural understanding and stronger connections across the community.

The exhibitions are expected to remain a popular attraction throughout the winter tourism season, providing opportunities for both residents and visitors to gain a deeper appreciation of the stories that have shaped the region.

The artwork is an installation by Butchulla Gubbi Gubbi artist Zartisha Davis, enhancing the windows of HBRG.

Zartisha's design celebrates the culturally significant shell middens that once lined the Fraser Coast shores—more than remnants of a diet, they represent gatherings where families came together to share food, stories, and connection.

Visit HBRG now to see two exhibitions honouring the history and acheivements of members of the Indigenous community.

HBRG sincerely thanks the performers at the gallery over the past few months, entertaining gallery visitors as part of the exhibition 𝘈𝘯𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘢 𝘒𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦: 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘌𝘯𝘥. 🗣️🎶

Your voices added a beautiful layer to the exhibition and enhanced the feeling of community spirit through song. It has been an honor to have you perform in the gallery as Anastasia had hoped.

Last month HBRG celebrated the final days of 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘯 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘺: 𝘰𝘣𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 with a dinner party in the gallery!

Surrounded by Reaney's minimalist artwork, the long dinner table in the gallery space was dressed in a similar theme, with menus echoing the rabbit and house shapes that appeared throughout the exhibition and Hemmingway quotes and silver pencils adorning the table setting.

Internationally acclaimed patisserie chef Amanda Young presented an intricate eight-course vegan menu with an exquisitely prepared succession of delicate morsels, each artfully created piece brimming with exquisite flavours.

The evening’s finale was a dramatic performance piece - a lemon tree dessert featuring hand-blown sugar lemons filled with lemon mousse and scattered with candied cumquats, hazelnut clusters, Italian meringue, sugarcombe and gold leaf. The edible garden was created by Amanda insitu as mezzo soprano Richelle Nicholls voice filled the room with a compilation of stunning opera songs as the dessert creation unfolded in front of the audience of dinner guests.

𝘋𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘚𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 was a perfect way to farewell 𝘰𝘣𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. A subtle fusion of carefully selected pieces, artfully assembled and thoughtfully enjoyed.
