It's Painting Time!

Coating all of the wooden frames and infrastructure in a sun resistant coating is an essential job that we undertake most years.

The sun is the best and the worst parts of Australia all wrapped up into a burning hot bundle. Wetside basks in the sunlight all year round, which is fantastic, but the suns powerful rays can do a lot of damage.

Sunlight is made up of infrared radiation which generate heat (~49%), visible light (~42%) and just a little bit of ultraviolet radiation or UV (~9%). However, it's those UV rays that are the biggest culprit when it comes to sun damage.

UV rays break down chemical bonds in organic polymers and plastics. This is what causes colours to fade and weakens many substances such as PVC piping to concrete and asphalt. Combine that with the heat and even concrete is prone to cracking. It's easy to see how it does so much damage to our skin!

Sun safety in Australia is extremely important, not just for people, but for all the buildings and infrastructure too! They can be protected in a number of ways such as better shading, UV resistant coatings and sealants and selecting more resistant materials.

Stay sun safe! Now back to painting 🎨😁

It's safe to say that water is a pretty important part of life, Wetside for starters would definitely struggle without it.

In the Fraser Coast it is estimated that residents use on average 200-240L of water a day, so making sure the water is safe is one of the highest priorities of the council.

There are 4 treatment plants in the Fraser Coast region for treating drinking water (Burgowan, Howard, Teddington and Tiaro) that can treat a total of about 70ML of water every day!

It's hard to imagine how much water that is, but if you can picture a 2L bottle of milk in your fridge, it is 35 million of those!

Furthermore there are another 8 treatment plants that treat the wastewater we have used that is mostly repurposed for agricultural use. They have the capacity to treat up to 20ML daily, or another 10 million bottles of milk.

A lot goes into maintaining the regions water security, you can find out more on the councils website.

We've moved onto tackling the forests that are our gardens!

To get Wetsides gardens back under control we've laid out a 5 step process.

1. Clear out all the leaf litter and sticks
2. Prune and remove plants as needed
3. Install a new and greatly improved garden edging all the way around
4. Level the ground and plant some lovely new native plants.
5. Top it all off with mulch or wood chips.

It's a long process and we have a lot of garden space so starting now we will give regular progress updates!

PS. Anyone concerned about the heavy pruning of our Birds of Paradise, dont worry! It may look bad but this is a process called Rejuvenation Pruning and if all goes well they should be back and looking better than ever in no time

Wetsides location has meant that nature has always been a feature, whether its living with or fighting against it.

Because of this it only feels right to add a few more special stats to add the fantastic numbers that Fraser Coast Regional Council posted for us earlier.

7 snake sightings, 7 incident free encounters
Half a dozen Lightning storms
1 rescued flying fox
1 new lovely garden (Thanks Tony!)
An endless amount of bin chickens
3 resident possums
Just a couple of insects and spiders (far more bin chickens)
A big, beautiful tree which is only matched by the mess it leaves
1 very happy rainbow lorikeet family
and 1 fantastic team of lifeguards.

And that is just what we remember!

Our winter maintenance is full steam ahead the replacement of our 9040 individual tactiles.

Tactiles are a great anti-slip feature, however their most vital role is to aid the sight impaired of any dangers such as steps, ramps, or in our case, entry into a wet area. Hence why the official, and much wordier, name for them is a tactile ground surface indicator.

We will stick to calling them tactiles.
