🎶✨WHAT A FABULOUS CONCERT✨🎶
🎼A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone involved in our wonderful concert at St Paul’s Cathedral yesterday evening. A FULL HOUSE enjoyed an uplifting program of beautiful music, featuring the incredible “Great” Mass in C Minor by W A Mozart-what a very special work to experience ✨
🎵Thanks to our amazing soloists, Molly Ryan, Phoebe Paine, Jiacheng Ding and Michael Lampard who thrilled us all as they brought the complex and demanding solo sections of the Mass to life.
You are all stars 🌟
A special mention to Phoebe, who stepped into the soloists’ lineup with only a few days’ notice.
🎻The wonderful Art of Sound Orchestra who brilliantly opened the concert with the sparkling Symphony No 37 in C Major by Haydn and provided beautiful accompaniment for the Motets and a fabulous orchestral force for the Mass-thanks to you all!🎺
🎼Enormous thanks, as always, to William Schmidt, our amazing rehearsal accompanist…. And to our marvelous Maestro, MARIO DOBERNIG, for his spirited leadership in bringing the concert program together and giving us the opportunity to perform such a brilliant work.
🎵Thanks and very well done to every member of our very large choir -we definitely climbed a choral mountain!
🎶Performances like this don’t simply happen. An army of volunteers has contributed to yet another successful concert. Huge thanks to the Victoria Chorale Committee Members and for the untiring work of everyone involved in: the preparation of the Concert Program, setting up and packing down of rehearsal and Concert venues, Concert promotions and ticket sales, Front of House on Concert Day, Section Leaders and the complex logistics of producing a Concert with so many moving parts. We couldn’t do it without you!
🎶✨We would also like to thank our magnificent audience. Your enthusiastic support is a wonderful reward for us all and very much appreciated. We look forward to seeing you all at our next concert on Saturday 29 August 2026✨🎶

🎶✨ JOIN US ….. for a wonderful performance of the “Great” Mass in C Minor by W A Mozart✨🎶
🎼The “Great” Mass in C Minor is a work of breathtaking scope, scored for large forces and employing an exciting fusion of Baroque contrapuntal techniques with contemporary Classical style and operatic flair.
🎶The work utilizes full chorus and double SATB chorus, smaller vocal ensembles and solo arias giving the “Great” Mass wonderful textural variety. Mozart uses every resource at his disposal, from trombone and timpani with full orchestra and powerful chorus to a few wood winds accompanying the intimacy of a single voice.
🎼The parts of the Mass written for solo voices are extremely demanding, featuring florid coloratura passages akin to operatic, virtuosic showpieces.
🎼Despite being incomplete, Mozart’s “Great” Mass in C Minor stands as a rival to J S Bach’s “B Minor Mass” and Handel’s “Messiah”-a reflection of Mozart’s immersive study of, and engagement with, the Baroque Masters.
✨🌈This is Mozart at his most daring and innovative; a work that soars beyond the conventions of his time and reveals his extraordinary creative genius🌈✨

🎵Conducted by our inspiring maestro MARIO DOBERNIG, accompanied by the Art of Sound Orchestra, with 4 outstanding soloists and the 110 strong Victoria Chorale.

🎵This is a RARE OPPORTUNITY to experience Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor.
🎼A work of rich textures, virtuosic acrobatics for our stunning soloists, complex choral fugues and bold orchestral statements, the Great Mass in C Minor is not often performed, possibly due to its “unfinished “ nature-thus depriving audiences of Mozart at his most daring and creative✨

🕊️Our concert will also feature an early Haydn Symphony-the sprightly No 37 in C Major- as well as five beautiful, contemplative choral works which showcase simple and sublime melodies and the evolution of composition from the 16th to the 21st Centuries
🎶Victoria Chorale will be joined by the wonderful ART OF SOUND ORCHESTRA, four outstanding soloists : MOLLY RYAN, Soprano, SALLY-ANNE RUSSELL, Mezzo-Soprano, JIACHENG DING, Tenor and MICHAEL LAMPARD, Baritone and conducted by the always fabulous MARIO DOBERNIG.

✨🎶 THE MYSTERY OF
THE UNFINISHED MASS🎶✨

🎼Join VICTORIA CHORALE for a performance of the spectacular Great Mass in C Minor by W A Mozart; a work of dramatic contrasts and spiritual depth.

🎶For a composition of such sublime complexity, that demonstrates the genius of its composer, Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor remained unfinished.
✨Originally conceived to be performed in Salzburg during a visit by Mozart, not all parts of the C Minor Mass were fully composed by the time of its premiere in October 1783. The completed sections were performed only once during Mozart’s lifetime, as part of a church service in St Peter’s Abbey Church in Salzburg, during which Mozart is thought to have played the organ continuo and Constanze Mozart- for whom they were written-sang the demanding first Soprano solos.
🎶It is believed the missing sections were substituted with Plainchant or parts of Mozart’s earlier composed Masses to fulfill the liturgical sequence.
✨Mozart returned to Vienna immediately after the premiere of his “unfinished “ Mass and never revisited the work to complete the missing sections-the reasons for this are still debated today……..
🧐Mozart clearly held his unfinished composition in high enough regard as he revived sections of it in a new work, based on Italian poetry, in 1785.
🧐Perhaps Mozart considered his vow -that motivated the composition- fulfilled and felt little urgency to complete the work.
🧐Mozart’s focus began to shift to other genres; piano concertos and operas.
🧐There was little interest in elaborate Mass settings, particularly in light of the restraints on church music imposed by Emperor Joseph II.
🧐Mozart lived under continual financial and time constraints. As a freelance composer he needed to prioritize works that were paid or in demand.

🎼Even in its unfinished form this work is one of epic grandeur and musical delights, challenging all performers with its artistry and broad scope.
✨🎶EXPERIENCE MOZART’S GREAT MASS IN C MINOR in the gorgeous setting of ST PAUL’s CATHEDRAL, Melbourne.

🎶 Conducted by our inspiring maestro MARIO DOBERNIG, accompanied by the Art of Sound Orchestra, with outstanding soloists : MOLLY RYAN, Soprano, SALLY-ANNE RUSSELL, Mezzo-Soprano, JIACHENG DING, Tenor and MICHAEL LAMPARD, Baritone.
✨🎶We hope to see you there🎶✨

🎼Our performance of Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor is only four and a half weeks away!
HAVE YOU BOUGHT YOUR TICKETS YET?
A composition on a grand scale, showcasing profound artistry and fusion of musical styles, DON’T MISS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE ONE OF MOZART’S GREATEST WORKS🎼
🎶The wonderful Great Mass in C Minor was composed as a labour of love and faith. It was begun in 1782 at a crossroad in Mozart’s life. He had moved to Vienna to work as a freelance composer and was planning to marry; neither of which his father, Leopold, approved.
🎶Mozart wrote to his father of a promise in his heart-a vow- to compose a Mass and have it performed in Salzburg should he succeed in bringing Constanze there as his wife. This followed a period of illness for Constanze and implied the composition of this work was in gratitude for her recovery, a gesture of thanksgiving for their marriage and an offering to his family-deeply personal and sacred.
🎶Although unfinished, the result is magnificent!
