✨🎶 THE MYSTERY OF
THE UNFINISHED MASS🎶✨
🎼Join VICTORIA CHORALE for a performance of the spectacular Great Mass in C Minor by W A Mozart; a work of dramatic contrasts and spiritual depth.
🎶For a composition of such sublime complexity, that demonstrates the genius of its composer, Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor remained unfinished.
✨Originally conceived to be performed in Salzburg during a visit by Mozart, not all parts of the C Minor Mass were fully composed by the time of its premiere in October 1783. The completed sections were performed only once during Mozart’s lifetime, as part of a church service in St Peter’s Abbey Church in Salzburg, during which Mozart is thought to have played the organ continuo and Constanze Mozart- for whom they were written-sang the demanding first Soprano solos.
🎶It is believed the missing sections were substituted with Plainchant or parts of Mozart’s earlier composed Masses to fulfill the liturgical sequence.
✨Mozart returned to Vienna immediately after the premiere of his “unfinished “ Mass and never revisited the work to complete the missing sections-the reasons for this are still debated today……..
🧐Mozart clearly held his unfinished composition in high enough regard as he revived sections of it in a new work, based on Italian poetry, in 1785.
🧐Perhaps Mozart considered his vow -that motivated the composition- fulfilled and felt little urgency to complete the work.
🧐Mozart’s focus began to shift to other genres; piano concertos and operas.
🧐There was little interest in elaborate Mass settings, particularly in light of the restraints on church music imposed by Emperor Joseph II.
🧐Mozart lived under continual financial and time constraints. As a freelance composer he needed to prioritize works that were paid or in demand.
🎼Even in its unfinished form this work is one of epic grandeur and musical delights, challenging all performers with its artistry and broad scope.
