Meet the Chief Adjudicator for the Symphony Orchestra Section!

Jeffrey A. Spenner joined the United States Coast Guard in June 2019 as the Assistant Director of the United States Coast Guard Band. As one of the two leaders in charge of U.S. Coast Guard Band, Mr. Spenner helps manage all aspects of the 55-member ensemble’s multifaceted mission – including concerts, ceremonies, recordings, and the band’s annual national tour.

Jeffrey has been the Assistant Conductor and Operations Manager with the Battle Creek Symphony in Michigan and Artistic and Education Coordinator for the Lexington Philharmonic in Kentucky. An advocate for music making at all levels, he held music directorships with numerous community ensembles including the Borgess Hospital Resounding Spirit Choir. Mr. Spenner brings his passion for music education to the Coast Guard Band where he oversees all of the band’s education and outreach programs.

Originally from Essexville, Michigan, Mr. Spenner’s Bachelor of Music degree is from the University of Illinois, and he holds a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting from Western Michigan University. In concert and selective workshops he conducted such ensembles as the Baltimore Symphony, Battle Creek Symphony, Berlin Sinfonietta, Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony, Filharmonica “Mihail Jora” Bacau, Fort Worth Symphony, Sinfonia da Camera, and members of the Berlin Philharmonic and Philharmonia Orchestra of London.

Meet our Chief Adjudicator for the VSMF Choir Section - Mark Puddy!

Mark lives in Melbourne, Australia, and has worked in music education for the past thirty five years. He is the resident composer and arranger for The Australian Girls Choir and his treble and mixed-voice works feature in eisteddfods and music festivals in Australia and overseas.

A highly regarded Australian composer, Mark’s commissioned pieces demonstrate his ability to write successfully in a wide variety of musical styles. He regularly writes for 5 year olds up to 80 year olds plus.

Over his teaching career Mark has held music leadership positions and taught primary and secondary students in both Melbourne and Adelaide. He now divides his time tutoring and conducting with The Australian Girls Choir, writing Australian choral music and running professional development sessions for music teachers.

Mark studied music, arts and education at Adelaide University and has played trumpet in the Australian and South Australian Youth Orchestras.
