FINDING YOUR FREEDOM: A Spoken Word Workshop with Ayo Busari.

Join us for a special afternoon of creativity, storytelling, and self-expression as part of Freedom Residency.

Led by award-winning multidisciplinary artist Mohammed ‘Ayo Busari’, this spoken word workshop invites participants to explore writing, voice, identity, storytelling, and freedom through guided exercises, performance techniques, and original creative work.

What does freedom mean to you? How does it sound in your voice? How does it live in your body? How does it change when spoken out loud?

Whether you’re a poet, performer, writer, musician, theatre-maker, dancer, visual artist, or simply someone curious about creative expression, this workshop offers a welcoming space to write, reflect, connect, and be heard.

Blue Joy Theatre Company is proud to introduce Freedom - an interdisciplinary residency and performance project developed at Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts and La Mama Theatre.

Blending theatre, live music, spoken word, and movement, Freedom explores liberation across diasporic Black identities. Journeying through Nigeria, the UK, the US, and Australia, the work reflects on migration, memory, belonging, and the dialogue between self and shadow, body and voice.

Written and created by Mohammed ‘Ayo’ Busari with collaborations from Prince Attwood, Shelby McKenzie, Oliver Hughes, and Tao Issaro, Freedom is a visceral and immersive work of reflection, resistance, and release.

The project will undertake a residency at Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts in Boorloo (Perth) from 25 May to 14 June 2026. Following the residency, the work will travel to La Mama Theatre in Naarm (Melbourne), where it will be presented as a work-in-progress showing from August 4 - 6, 2026, as part of the Explorations series.

What do you notice in the spaces you move through every day?

Join with artists .busari & for a guided storytelling workshop exploring movement, memory, and connection to place. Together, we’ll reflect on the small, often unseen moments that shape our daily experience and how these stories can be transformed into a story.

This is a space to pause, observe, and write.
