Meet Kym Barrett established local artist and volunteer at ART POST!!!

We are very proud to announce that Kym has an opening of her latest artwork at Cool Art Gallery which officially opens this Saturday 6 June, 4pm.

The exhibition titled ‘She is woven into the Mystery’, is Kym's latest solo exhibition that encopasees paintings with richly nuanced surfaces and an intentional obscurity that ask questions about the mystery of being human.

Kym says, "When I start a painting, I don’t know what the outcome will be. I aim for qualities that I want the work to embody, like depth, a richly nuanced surface, and an intentional obscurity. My painting process is intuitive. Surfaces are built up and carved into, veiled and unveiled, until it feels right. It’s always a dance between structure and freedom. My very Self and everyone’s Self is intimately woven into the Mystery of Being. And Mystery is ultimately undefinable. It’s always the Big Unknown. I’m learning to be comfortable with this uncertainty, and with the elusiveness of the painting process too.

Kym Barrett has lived and worked in Chatsworth, south-east Queensland for over 45 years. She graduated from Fine Arts (painting and drawing) at the Brisbane College of Art (now QCA) in 1975 and has held 22 solo exhibitions.

Kym was the 2022 Bundaberg Art Prize winner, the 2021 Flying Arts Queensland Regional Arts Award winner and has won many other Queensland Art Awards.

She has been a finalist in more than 20 Queensland prizes and a finalist in 5 national awards since 2015. Her work is held in the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery Landscape Collection, Greenslopes Private Hospital, Sunshine Coast Regional Council Art Collection and Moreton Bay Regional Council Art Collection as well as in numerous private collections.

Kym currently creates abstract paintings that are process driven and which, whilst exhibiting rich luminosity and depth are intentionally open-ended, describing something out of reach but also the artist’s journey to a deeper ground.

We love Kym!!

Call for entries into the controversial AiA1 exhibition close soon.

At ART POST we are grappling with the implications of this technology and asking artists to join the debate, whether you choose to exhibit a hand made artwork in protest, or use Ai to generate one.

Sandra Ross, one of the many volunteers who operate ART POST used CHATGPT to merge 2 images to create the one in this post. One is her hand drawn watercolour and the other a photograph she took on site at Amama forest.

She says, "Already there is controversy around ART POST showing this kind of work. Our intention is to generate discussion, not to promote or disregard this technology. It is obvious that Ai is here to stay, and there are significant ramifications for creatives in the future."

At ART POST we want to raise the big questions.

Due 28 May!

Artificial Intelligence (Ai or AI) is increasingly infiltrating our lives.

As an artist run initiative we understand that creatives are grappling with the implications of this technology on their practice.

Can creatives harness the incredible power of this to inform their work? Or is it some dark sinister danger? And don’t forget about the environmental impact of this technology on our planet… and the wealth generated that goes into a minority of already full pockets…

We seek artists to explore the Ai debate by making an artwork.

Feel free to be political or controversial. We are after thought provoking work.

It has to that fit into an A1 frame, whether that be several images or one – totally up to you.

Keep the prompt/conversation (if you use Ai) with the platform you use.

We supply the frame, and you get to keep it.

You can sell your work.
