For those new to the rodeo world and wondering what a timed event judge does, here’s a little explanation for you.

A rodeo timed event judge is responsible for officially judging and recording the results of rodeo events where the competitor’s time determines the score or placing.
Typical timed events include:
🐎 Barrel racing
🐎 Team roping
🐎 Tie-down roping
🐎 Breakaway roping
🐎 Steer wrestling
🐎 Steer undecorating

What the judge does:
The judge watches each run closely and:
Starts and stops the official time using the approved timing system.
Determines whether the competitor has completed the event correctly.
Watches for penalties, such as knocking over a barrel or breaking a barrier.
Confirms that the animal and competitor have met the event rules.
Records or confirms the official time and penalties.
Communicates any disqualifications or penalties to the timekeeper/announcer.
Makes sure the event is run fairly and consistently for every competitor.
Works with the timekeepers, chute crew and arena officials to ensure the results are accurate.

This year we would like to recognise our wonderful rough stock judges, the team at The Long Track Pantry Jugiong are donating a beautiful hamper for them to enjoy.

🤠 Ever wondered what our judges are looking for at our Bongongo Angus Gundagai Rodeo:

Our rough stock judges are responsible for watching the ride and deciding how well both the cowboy and the animal perform. The aim is to score the performance fairly, consistently and according to the rodeo rules.
In events such as bull riding, saddle bronc and ba****ck, the judge generally:

🐂 Watches the animal – how strongly it bucks, its speed, power, movement, spins, changes of direction and overall difficulty.
🤠 Watches the competitor – balance, control, body position, timing and how well they respond to the animal.
⏱️ Determines whether the ride is completed – in many rough-stock events, the competitor must remain aboard for the required 8 seconds.
🚫 Identifies disqualifications – such as touching the animal with the free hand, losing control before the required time, or breaking other event rules.
📊 Awards a score – generally with the competitor and animal each contributing to the overall score.
👀 Watches for fouls and rule breaches – and makes the appropriate call during the ride.
⚖️ Works with the other judges.

📝 Records or communicates the official result for the announcer and office staff.
