No Mud, No Lotus takes its title from Thích Nhất Hạnh’s book of the same name, a teaching that reminds us that suffering and beauty are inseparable and that growth emerges through what we endure. In this painting, I depict myself alongside my sisters, our intertwined roots shaped by migration, resilience and quiet, inherited strength. Through this work, I reflect on how identity is formed within family and how, like the lotus, we continue to rise, carrying both the mud and the bloom. 🪷
