From Tuesday 5 May, Ivanhoe Library and Cultural Hub Art Gallery is thrilled to be presenting Bangerang artist Peta Clancy’s acclaimed ‘Undercurrent’ series.

Clancy’s practice responds to colonial representations of landscape by working with Country rather than treating it as subject matter. Country holds culture, memory and story that cannot simply be captured in an image.

To create the works – developed in collaboration with Dja Dja Wurrung Traditional Owners and Country during a residency with the Koorie Heritage Trust – Clancy printed large-scale images of the landscape and attached them to a custom-built frame on the same site where the image was first taken. She sliced and re-photographed the images to challenge our focus on denied histories. Trees peer over the fault line of the divided image, combining two contemporary moments to instil in viewers a yearning to see what is behind and, in turn, remind us to look for what is hidden below.

‘Undercurrent’ is part of our ongoing celebration of Heidelberg School masterpieces – on long-term loan from the National Gallery of Australia as part of Sharing the National Collection – that invites leading Australian artists to enter a critical dialogue with this treasured heritage.

Already underway and running until Sunday 10 May at Ivanhoe Library and Cultural Hub: Lachlan Plain's CHRYSALIS.

CHRYSALIS is a meditation on metamorphosis – on things becoming other things. The moon waxes and wanes, cells divide, babies grow, and grubs become butterflies. Human life is a series of metamorphoses, as we transition from one phase to the next, one body to the next.

This immersive installation combines Lachlan Plain’s sculpture and painting, with his rudimentary handcrafted animation. It is underscored by Nick Wilson’s mesmerizing composition for guitar and prayer bowl.

CHRYSALIS the exhibition is presented by Banyule City Council and Melbourne International Animation Festival (MIAF).

Entry to all exhibitions Ivanhoe Library and Cultural Hub is free. For opening times and more information, visit https://www.banyule.vic.gov.au/Events-activities/Whats-on/Exhibition-history/CHRYSALIS
