West Side Poetry Slam

West Side Poetry Slam Monthly open mic night on Wednesdays. Anything can be poetry. In partnership with WestWords. Other performance art forms are also welcome.

West Side Poetry Slam is a monthly hybrid open mic night where you can sign up on the night and perform an original piece of writing to open minds, hearts, and arms. Audience members score with a fun line of feedback and you could win a support feature slot at the next slam. Run & hosted by DEFNE in partnership with Westwords.

We're SO EXCITED to have Western Sydney poet BEA feature for our APS heat!

BEA is a poet and multidisciplinary artist of subversion, survival, and sass living on unceded Darug land. Their poetry collection “i love you in the most platonic way possible” was published with Illographo Press in 2024. They’ve had work in places such as the Australian Poetry Journal and Frankie Press, and in 2025 BEA won the Blacktown City Council Mayoral Creative Writing Prize for poetry. Beyond the page, BEA has won various medals at Bankstown Poetry Slam’s Grand Slam and National Youth Poetry Slam. Raised in Mount Druitt, BEA is passionate about connecting with and supporting young Western Sydney creatives.

This month's slam is different as we're honoured to be hosting the Australian Poetry Slam Parramatta Heat! This means you get a local entry point to the NATIONAL competition. The audience will send TWO poets to represent Parramatta in the Sydney Finals...and potentially further?? 👀 It all culminates at the Opera House where one will become the 2026 Australian Poetry Slam-bassador and win an international writers’ festival tour worth $20K!

Sneha Sobti (she/her) is a poet, educator, and storyteller whose work is rooted in lived experience as a first‑generation q***r migrant woman with Punjabi lineage shaped by a refugee family history from the India-Pakistan partition. Her decolonial storytelling traces the quiet ways change takes shape - through language, care, accessibility, and community.
She curates spaces of connection and healing, empowering people to lead joyful, grounded lives. Sneha has shaped inclusive initiatives and been invited to share her work - and her voice - with organisations including the United Nations Association of Australia.

If I had a nickle for everytime it was a West Side feature's birthday, I'd have 2 nickles—which isn't a lot, but it's *GREAT that it happened twice!

Albert Lin is a spoken-word poet, musician, general jack-of-all-trades, and person with a day job. He doesn’t take himself very seriously, and thinks the same of his work. He finds poetry to be a way of expressing and articulating things, and considers his own to be a series of love letters to the world, himself, and everything else. Albert has created hour-long theatrical poetry shows, had his work displayed in art exhibits, and has performed in and out of Sydney in various contexts, including at the Melbourne Fringe Festival, Everything But the Kitchen Sink Festival, and the Butterfly Club.

Thank you to everyone who celebrated our 7TH BIRTHDAY last slam! And everyone who wanted to but couldn't but still make up our community 💖

If you're not ready to stop partying - don't worry, next slam it will also be our feature's birthday! 👀

So save the date for Aug 12! And for the rest of the year we are now regularly on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. (Unless something goes wrong).
