Brisbane Festival starts this week and we’re pretty pumped about it.

It runs 4 to 26 September. Riverfire opens it up on Saturday the 5th. Night at the Parkland is on at Roma Street from the 5th to the 20th with The Temper Trap, Missy Higgins, PNAU, Icehouse, Aloe Blacc, Human Nature, plus a Cruel Sea and Magic Dirt double bill. The Magic Mirrors Spiegeltent is back at South Bank for the first time in six years. And the Festival Village at South Bank runs the whole way through with a heap of free stuff on.

Twenty five days of music, theatre and dance right across the city. It’s a big one this year.

A few of our DJs are playing slots at Festival Village across the weekdays and weekends, and we’re really chuffed about that. It’s a great festival and we’re glad to be a small part of it.

If you haven’t had a look at the program yet, do yourself a favour. There’s a lot on and plenty of it costs nothing.

None of these three things are about how good someone can DJ.

Talent is the easy part to check. Send a mix, watch a video, done.

The hard part is everything else. Will they actually answer you before the gig? Will they play for the room not just themselves? Will they put in the work, not just show up?

You won’t see any of that in a press kit.

That’s the real difference between DJs who work every weekend and DJs who don’t.

Stop treating “available” and “right for the room” as the same thing.

We keep a shortlist of 5 or 6 DJs for every kind of room. Best available fit gets the gig.

That’s the difference between a cancellation being a 5-minute fix or an all night scramble.

You can tell within the first five minutes if a DJ’s going to be a problem.

From how they talk to people.

Had a couple tell me this week they’ve watched the same thing happen at venue after venue…DJ behind the decks, can’t take a request, acts like the room’s lucky to have him.

They didn’t want that at their wedding.

The issue is they’re not wrong, it’s genuinely one half of this industry.

The other half listens, reads the crowd and takes requests.

You just have to know how to find them.

That’s where we come in.
