You drive up a mountain. You spend an afternoon with the person who made the thing you are taking home. You hear the story behind it.

Both are valid. Honestly.

But only one of them changes how you feel about the object forever.

Well, I'm here to tell you that ART has arrived on the Gold Coast.

The Doyles Art Award is a collection of incredible artists from across Australia - amateur to professional - focusing on Landscape, Still Life, Figurative (both people and animal).

Artists have travelled from near and far to take part and the work this year is exceptional. The skill is simply unreal.

All art is for sale and as an annual volunteer-run exhibition - it needs our community to support it and keep it moving forward. All you need to do it visit - it's WORTH IT!

Catch it before it closes on 28 June.

One good piece of art can do more for a room than a full renovation.

I know that sounds dramatic. But I have seen it happen.

It anchors the space. Sets the tone. Tells anyone who walks in something true about the person who lives there.

You do not need a full collection. You need one right piece.

That is it.

But how much better is it when that piece also comes with a story. A local artist who can tell you what they were thinking when creating that piece. Making a connection with you and your home. Priceless.

The Gold Coast's longest-running fine art award is back — and this week I got to see it before the judges did.

300+ artists. 500 works. Landscapes, portraits, animals, still life — all painted with a level of skill that's hard to believe up close.

Prices from a few hundred dollars to over $10,000, so there's genuinely something for every wall and every budget.

My guess is that about 20–30% of the artists are from right here on the Gold Coast — seeing their names in the show feels like running into old friends. The rest have travelled from Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and all over Australia.

The judges' awards are announced 19 June, with $20,000 on the line for the Landscape category so this is a really a huge moment for the artists involved.

If you are on the Gold Coast, or local to SE Queensland - go and see it for yourself, remember that buying from the art award is supporting the local arts community here - that's half the joy. Hurray!

This is most of my week.

Moving through galleries and studios. Looking at what Gold Coast artists are making right now. Thinking about which homes these works belong in.

It's important to me that I see what is in the big galleries as well as small exhibitions - knowing what quality and experience looks like in art is a journey.

If you are just starting to buy art and you are not sure where to begin...

Start with what you love.

For a lot of people that means landscapes. Florals. Still life.

These are not beginner subjects. They are some of the most enduring in the history of art.

The trick is not to choose the subject.

It is to find the artist whose version of that subject you cannot look away from.

That is the bit I can help with.
