Athol leads teachers, at all stages in their career, to a place of confidence to teach the art of clowning. I left the workshop with a range of knowledge and skills that I could immediately implement in my Yr9 Clowning unit this term.

Biography: Athol Henderson

Born and educated in South Africa, Athol has always had an interest
in performing, especially within the areas of clowning, mime,
puppetry (traditional Punch and Judy), magic and unicycling. After completing a first class Drama Honours Degree at the University of Natal, Durban, he began teaching, writing, directing and acting professionally both nationally and internationally. After his marriage in 1995, Athol and his wife lived in the UK for a year, where he used his teaching and clowning skills to support a church plant in Richmond, Surrey. On his return to South Africa, he was approached by Kearsney College, an independent boys boarding school, to establish Drama as a subject. After a teacher exchange, in 2002, at The Southport School, Athol and his family immigrated to the Gold Coast. He has been Drama Coordinator at Hillcrest Christian College since 2005 and on the Gold Coast Drama Panel since 2006. He has written and directed productions for the Gold Coast Secondary Schools’ Drama Festival, winning a number of awards. He is a passionate advocator of Drama and encourages his students to see their acting as a ‘gift’. Apart from his teaching, he enjoys mountain biking, bushwalking, snorkelling and running and is the Duke of Edinburgh Award Leader at the College.

CLOWN CLASSES FOR DRAMA STUDENTS OR ADULTS - GOLD COAST

Are you interested in pursuing Clown classes for Drama students or Adults at your College, School or Community?

Based on the teachings of Jacque Le Coq and Philippe Gaulier, classes will explore the creative potential of play (Le Jeu) in performance. Classes will teach participants to develop their own clown and present a comic act to an audience. No previous acting experience is required just a willingness to discover your clown.

"Clown training for actors teaches sensitivity to an audience. Actors are rarely taught to break the illusion of what we commonly refer to as the ‘fourth wall,’ the imaginary division between stage and audience. In clowning, the shoe is on the other foot: Clowns must always remain aware of those who are watching. This knowledge allows them to consciously and conscientiously bare their souls. So, clowning not only permits you to rediscover your playful self, but it allows you to share meaningful discoveries with your audience. The potency of this communion can be a life-altering experience" (Eli Simon)

Class sizes: 4-12 participants. Comfortable clothing that you can move in. Clown noses provided.

Classes:
Thursday evenings (3 consecutive weeks): 2 hours between 4:00-6:00pm
OR
Saturday or Sunday Intensive: 9-3pm

Cost:
$20 students
$40 adults

Venue requirements: Drama Studio or Empty Space with a simple flat (free standing screen) in the centre. Chairs for participants.
