The morning session at Year 12 Math Methods Bootcamp at Griffith Gold Coast Campus.

This was an example we did in the Year 12 Methods Griffith Bootcamp. Below we calculated the probability of a family with 3 children producing 2 females, using 4 methods which produce the same result. We drew a diagram, used arithmetic calculations, a formula and two different functions in statistics mode on the calculator. Year 12's need to be proficient in all types of thinking. I also noticed there are questions on sample exams which require explanations and reasoning about the methods chosen. To be successful, the hard work and commitment started in earlier years.

Day 1 of the online Bootcamp starts tomorrow. With 47 enrolled from all over the state, I hope to hear stories about how students coped with isolation. I also hope to help fill in gaps in understanding of key concepts in mathematical methods. I read once, that life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you deal with it. Isolation may have been more challenging for some than others, but signing up to bootcamp is a great way to help deal with any setbacks and get ahead Onward and upward!

A colleague shared this article on mathematics anxiety. There is something to be said about cultural reproduction at home and at school, as discussed in the article. One approach might be to talk about math as a way of thinking, and a way of solving problems. It's a handy tool, like creative writing. Replace the emphasis on rote learning, and put it on problem-solving. One example is 'timed' times tables. Take the clock away, let the student make their own times table grid, and let the student use their own grid as a resource to find the answers. I've seen approach this work.

Mastering times tables with hands on tools for these aspiring cadets. I really enjoy helping bright young people develop efficient methods of problem solving and thinking, not just rote learning.
