Last week one activity theme was adapted across all three sections of the Gingin Scout Group — and what an adventure it turned out to be! 🌿🏕️🚁

🧭 Joeys – “Lost” Adventure Day
Our Joeys had an awesome time learning some very important survival skills in a fun and hands-on way. They discovered:
💧 How to make muddy water clearer
🔥 Homemade fire-starting aids
📡 How to send SOS signals with a torch
☎️ How to phone 000 in an emergency

We were especially impressed that so many of them confidently knew their home address — well done Joeys! 👏

Their favourite activity by far was building quick emergency shelters using tree branches and foil emergency blankets. It was wonderful seeing their teamwork, creativity and excitement throughout the evening.

A huge thank you to Kookaburra for helping and taking photos and videos throughout the activity. ❤️

🚁🐊 Cubs – Lost in the Kimberley
Yesterday our Cubs were dramatically “dropped by helicopter” deep in the Kimberley region to begin their epic trek along the crocodile-infested Ord River. 🥾

Armed with backpacks and plenty of enthusiasm, our brave explorers quickly discovered that SOMEONE had forgotten to pack the map and compass. 🤦‍♀️ Naturally… we got completely lost.

After much discussion about whether to backtrack or continue forward, the Cubs worked together like true adventurers:
💧 Filtered muddy water using cups and paper towel
🐊 Helped fellow Cubs safely cross the “river” without becoming crocodile snacks
📡 Sent SOS rescue signals in the hope a helicopter might spot them
🔥 Found a safe place to light a fire and cook food

Of course, survival is never easy — the wood was wet! Luckily our clever Cubs experimented with different fire starters including:
✨ Hand sanitizer
🧴 Cotton balls with Vaseline
🥔 Potato chips from their backpack supplies

It was fantastic seeing everyone encouraging one another, solving problems together and fully embracing survival mode. 🌿👏

A massive thank you to our wonderful explorer parents Jess and Anastasia for helping make the adventure possible. ❤️

Pretty sure the Cubs are now qualified for their own survival TV show. 🏕️😂

🥾 Scouts – Lost on the Bibbulmun
Tonight our Scouts faced the ultimate survival challenge in a simulated emergency scenario along the famous Bibbulmun Track.

The wilderness proved unforgiving, with the team immediately dealing with several serious (simulated!) medical emergencies:
🩹 Casper suffered a broken arm
🩼 Owen had a broken leg
🥶 Hudson had severe hypothermia and shock

The Scouts had to think quickly to administer first aid, stabilise their injured teammates and keep everyone calm under pressure.

Despite the mounting challenges, they pushed through several critical survival situations:
💧 Successfully sourced and purified water
🌊 Safely navigated a difficult river crossing with injured teammates
🔥 Tested multiple fire-starting methods and discovered Vaseline worked best
📡 Sent out rescue signals… although the rescue helicopter may have struggled slightly to locate them initially 😅

The biggest success of the night came during the debrief, where the Scouts recognised that survival is about far more than practical skills. They identified two key lessons for next time:
🤝 Work together more as a cohesive unit
👂 Listen to everyone’s ideas before rushing decisions

It was a fantastic high-energy evening full of problem solving, resilience and teamwork.

We are incredibly proud of all our Joeys, Cubs and Scouts for embracing the challenges, stepping outside their comfort zones and supporting one another every step of the way.
