Beginning in 1959 as a tradition among Catholics within the fishing industry, Geraldton’s Blessing of the Fleet has become one of our town’s most cherished annual celebrations, uniting fishing families and the wider community for generations.

Today marks the continuation of this proud tradition. Across the world, seafarers of every faith have long sought divine protection before setting out to sea, and Geraldton’s fishermen are no exception. Their faith and connection to the ocean run deep.

This photo from 1960 captures that enduring spirit of faith, family, and the love of the sea. Though much has changed over the years, the heart of the celebration remains the same: honouring those who make their living from our waters and giving thanks for their safe return.
