The Marri tree (Corymbia calophylla), is a bloodwood or redgum that produces a deep red resin called 'kino' — a rich, tannin-filled sap that seeps from the tree when it’s wounded, then hardens in the air. This is the Marri’s way of healing and protecting itself from fire, insects, fungi and disease.

Marri translates to ‘blood’ in Noongar and has long been a source of medicine with the resin used to treat wounds, skin conditions and internal illness.

Using Marri kino to make natural dye baths and inks creates earthy reds and golden to deep browns. This piece is called ‘Ancestors’ and reflects the resilience and protection which comes from our old people.

Look for the creamy white Marri blossoms from Birak to Djeran (December to May) and the iconic ho**ey nuts that follow, much loved by Karrak, the Red-tailed Cockatoo.
