'the corner store'

About 100 metres from our front door, around a corner, are these cute little shops. A pizza place, massage parlour, a coin laundry, an office, and a grocery store (that's unfortunately closed 😓).

I painted this in summer. This sun-drenched little strip in the middle of the suburb was so nostalgic to me. Haze rises up from the concrete giving the shops and everything around them a blurry shimmer. It reminds me of going to the local milk bar to get a popsicle when I was growing up.

I'm hopeful that they will reopen the grocery store and introduce a cafe to the fold. Then this will be my fave hangout 😉. There's something about local businesses, corner stores, and street shops that I love. They fill a special space the big chains can't occupy. To all my locals, thank you for the services you provide.

The corner store is part of my limited neighbourhoods series. DM for details. If you are interested in having a special space or part of your neighbourhood painted, feel free to get into contact.

'the walk home'

This piece captures the leafy, sunny view I get in the warmer months on the way back to our house after walking the kids to school. I absolutely love walking my kids to school. It's something I am so so very grateful to be able to do.

We have an amazing little pocket. Our neighbours are kind and social. Our street leads to our local footy/cricket oval. The road seems to be a constant focus for the council (I have no idea why they feel the need to constantly resurface it?). There's always something sitting on the nature strips for free. Everything about it is so normal but also nostalgic. This piece is trying to capture some of that glow that I feel on sunny days doing this walk.

Painting neighbourhoods, streetscapes, and special moments in time is kinda my thing so if you would like a custom piece of your own, get into contact.

'prinsesstårta'

This beauty is my favourite cake. I bake lots of cakes, I eat lots of cake, but interestingly enough I've probably only had this cake twice? Maybe three times? In my whole life! Wild. Maybe that's why I always call it my favourite cake.

Either way, this pastel confection is usually made with layers of jam, sponge cake, custard, and whipped cream all topped with a layer of marzipan on top. My version is much less delicious 😂. Crafted from acrylic paint and texture paste, I wanted the beautiful variety of colours and textures of this cake to be represented.

I've also included a snapshot of where I painted this. My "studio" is a cute corner of our spare room. This room triples as workout room, second lounge space, and my painting space. Maximum efficiency over here 😆

Prinsesstårta will not be available for sale. I would love, however, to paint more cakes. So if you or someone you know has a favourite that you would like immortalised, this is the only way to have your cake and eat it too!

'message in a bottle'

Something Rusty and I have figured out about our kids is that they really love going for walks. Which is weird cause I never did as a kid, I grew into that particular pastime. 🤷🏼‍♀️

We took them for a long walk along thirteenth beach towards the end of summer. It was not that warm, but sunny and they were facing a huge headwind, but they loved it. As we walked along we came across this interesting thing. A glass bottle with a group of tiny pipis/clams/something(?) attached to it embedded in a small cluster of seaweed.

We immediately started deciding on its origin story. One of the best parts of having kids is that I can now tell wild outlandish tales without anyone stopping me and I get at least two rapt listeners who contribute absolute gold. That's why I had to paint this piece. To capture that moment. Although trying to capture glass glistening in the sun through watercolour was tough, I couldn't imagine doing it any other way.

'message in a bottle' will not be available for sale. However, if you also have an image or memory you want brought to life that means something to you/your family, reach out. I love making art that captures a moment in time.

'golden hour'

Golden hour is my favourite time of day. It's hard to put it into words but everything just seems a bit more magical. The way the sun dapples through leaves or lights the tips of flowers. Even tiny insects and motes of dust become these ephemeral sparkly things that look beautiful against the darker shadows. I dunno, it's tough to describe it. It's just damn beautiful.

The inspiration for this piece, outside of golden hour being my favourite time of day, was the song by JVKE. I think it perfectly captures this time. That unbelievable line of rolling piano and strings that just lifts and lifts. So beautiful, just like this time of day.

This original is not for sale but a limited run of prints will be available early next year on my online store. Stay tuned.

Celebrating my 1st year on Facebook. Thank you for your continuing support. What a year! Trying to make it as a "full-time artist" while also being a "stay at home mum" at the same time as working 2-3 days a week as a casual teacher certainly has taught me what a juggle really feels like!!! I am so grateful however for my life and being able to do what I do. Managing my work across multiple platforms is a challenge, but look forward to seeing a lot more of me on Facebook and Instagram. 🙏🤗🎉

Chipping away at my minis this week still. Progress might be a little slow as I recover from the emotional rollercoaster that has been sending my youngest off to prep, while finding some casual work (apparently having 100 followers on my Facebook art page doesn't put food on the table! Who knew?!), as well as trying to plan an unexpected and now somewhat urgent renovation of our kitchen (as well as all grey water plumbing😭). Still, wouldn't trade any of it.
