𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒊𝒕 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒐𝒃𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒆𝒕𝒆?

Blending theatre, film, live music and choreography, NEANDERTHAL follows an acclaimed voice-over artist whose work on the last of the Neanderthals leads him to question his own relevance in a changing world.

Exploring extinction, cognition and the fear of becoming obsolete, this new work asks what happens when we begin to lose our place in the world.

Directed by Bruce Gladwin, with an original score by Grammy-nominated composer Andy Clausen this ambitious new production brings our ensemble together with a live brass quintet on stage.

MPAC and Back to Back Theatre are excited to announce NEANDERTHAL – Histoire(s) du Théâtre VIII, a major new theatre work commissioned by Monash University and premiering in April 2027.

Created by one of Australia’s most celebrated and internationally recognised theatre companies, NEANDERTHAL is a funny, bold and intellectually adventurous work exploring cognition, extinction and what it means to be human.

Developed by Back to Back Theatre’s renowned ensemble of artists with intellectual disabilities, the production brings together theatre, music and large-scale storytelling in the company’s most ambitious work to date.

Our Festival d'Automne à Paris 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐭 isn’t only about the works already in our repertoire. In Paris, we’ll also begin developing something new: 𝐍𝐄𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐋 – 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐢𝐫𝐞(𝐬) 𝐝𝐮 𝐓𝐡éâ𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐕𝐈𝐈𝐈.

Inspired by conversation with paleoanthropologists, a philosopher, a Lacanian psychoanalyst and six actors with an intellectual disability, Back to Back Theatre presents 𝐍𝐄𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐋 an expansive work that interrogates the themes of extinction and cognition.
