Édouard Vuillard was a member of the Nabis, alongside painters Maurice Denis, Pierre Bonnard, Félix Vallotton and Ker-Xavier Roussel. Persuaded to join the group by Maurice Denis, Vuillard and the other Nabis were inspired by Synthetism and rejected naturalism in favour of flattened forms, decorative colour and symbolic expression.

During this period, Vuillard predominantly painted intimate interior scenes, including his mother’s home, seamstresses at work and the homes of his friends.

His work became characterised by areas of flat colour, decorative patterns and simplified outlines. Inspired by the Japanese prints popular in Paris’s artistic circles, the patterned picture-plane became more important than traditional perspective.

The same criticisms that once dismissed Monet as tasteless are still being levelled at artists today, as Geelong Gallery’s landmark exhibition powerfully demonstrates, writes Humphrey Clegg. Read more here 👉 https://bit.ly/4cXjtfX

Monet Mondays!

At first glance, ‘Peonies’ can look more like Monet’s palette than a garden.

If you look carefully, you can see peonies growing under a straw shelter. The flowers are difficult to make out, reduced to simple patches of colour.

Here. the freedom of Monet’s brushstrokes foreshadows his final work and the beginnings of abstraction.

Discover Monet and the other Impressionists in Discovering the Impressionists. Only at Geelong Gallery.

'Seeing beyond the Masters'. Presented by Roger Benjamin
Saturday 29 August, 3.00 to 4.00pm

How did Impressionism come into being, and how did it become one of the most influential approaches to painting for more than a century?

Discovering the Impressionists explores the remarkable legacy of Paul Durand-Ruel—the art dealer who staked everything on a movement the establishment refused to accept. The exhibition also brings the work of a second generation of painters, long overshadowed by their illustrious predecessors, into direct dialogue with Monet, Renoir and their contemporaries.

In this lecture, Roger Benjamin will explore the historical questions raised by Discovering the Impressionists, 150 years after the movement began, and consider new perspectives on the ‘global’ reach of Impressionism, from Russia and Japan to Australia and Chile.

What started as a tour for Rebecca Thistleton, Labor Candidate for South Barwon, soon became a very fun conversation with her daughter Tommi. We think it is fair to say that sharing the work of some of the most famous painters with Tommi, and hearing her thoughts on the exhibition was a highlight of our Director’s day. Thank you Rebecca and Tommi, for visiting!

We are so grateful to the Victorian Government for supporting the exhibition and helping make it possible for visitors of all ages, especially our youngest!
