š Field Notes: Butcherbird 2 š
50cm x 50cm
Acrylic paint and oil pastel on canvas, framed in oak with a walnut stain.
This is the second painting Iāve done based on the butcherbird song, which is described in my bird guide as āmelodious rollicking and whistling, often in duet.ā The āvoiceā section of the guide is definitely my favourite because the descriptions are always so entertaining and kind of weird. The Torresian Crow, for instance, is described as saying āokay okay okay okay okayā all the time, while the Striated Heron squawks āexplosive āhooāsā (šš). The Red-necked Avocet āyelps and wheezes,ā whereas the Sooty Albatross partakes in āsad screamingā (š„“š).
Anyway! Iām still exploring the butcherbird call at the moment, thinking an even bigger canvas is in order. Perhaps the magpie should be next?
