Hello! There are a few new folks here and today is the first anniversary of my YouTube channel, the FleeceFolk Diary, so I thought it time I reintroduce myself!

My name is Azrah. I am a self-proclaimed fleece fiend (evidence attached) & fibre artist! 🐑 I’m on a mission to encourage people to think locally about wool no matter where they fall in the lifecycle of wool. More importantly, I’m on a mission to get more Australians spinning again and to showcase the wide variety of wool available to us in this part of the world 🌍

As an ex-researcher, I’m now keeping those skills sharp with a woolly lens and sharing what I learn about this industry and its people with you!

Keep scrutinising those ball bands and chatting to your local mills, dyers and farmers! Thank you for being here and for supporting my passion ♥️ Here’s to many more trips around the sun in our FleeceFolk Flock! X

Happy Jaunty SAL finish line to everyone celebrating! I’ve been holding this in since I started the spin some months ago. There is potentially a video coming on all the makings of this, but I thought it fitting to share it here today!

I knit my 1st Jaunty in 5 days when the pattern released using last year’s Tour de Fleece combo spin. It was deep, moody and screamed winter! I wanted to make this version a complement to that shawl and opted for these bright and happy braids from stash! I’ve called this spin “new sprouts 🌱” as it reminded me of regrowth in forests after bushfire season and art imitated life at that time 💚

As teamed up with for this Spin to Knit-along, I thought I’d give this challenge an Aussie twist and spun this on my Twisted Sheep e-spinner from

The fibre is also a chorus of Aussie goodness combining Polwarth, superfine merino and Castledale 🧡 I spun just over 300g and created a Jaunty blanket and it is my softest, warmest knit to date!!!

How many things do you do accidentally on purpose? 🤔 I have managed to spin a gradient but that’s not even the subject of this week’s FleeceFolk Diary entry!

I was lucky enough to get my hands on a small sample of Crackle’s fleece - he is 75% Polwarth, 25% Merino and 100% a show off! I have had a very public unrequited love affair with Polwarth. Maximum fun with minimum yield 😢 To beat that fine wool tax ™, this week I experimented with scouring fleece in arranged layers of locks. The result has been a delightful surprise and has definitely changed how I plan to approach fine wool fleece in the future!

Amidst the chaos, this video also covers some other nuggets of tomfoolery including plying from wheel to wheel and how I start a leader on a bobbin 🧵

You can find this week’s background noise using the link in my bio 📺

Happy spinning!

Birka Shawl | Fleece to Garment 🧶

This is a reminder more to myself than anyone else that I do actually knit (despite the grid bias 😂). I knit this over weeks and months - the gentle rhythm of the garter and slipped stitches kept me and my handspun joys, solid quiet company! I really love Annelie’s thoughtful design on this number. It truly showcases the variegated yarn so beautifully!

Pattern: Birka Shawl by .thomasson
Yarn:
🧶 Main colour - Marilyn, Corriedale X handspun from fleece
🧶 Contrast colour - Handspun from hand dyed Polwarth braid from Lyrebird Yarns

I discussed the makings of this shawl in Woolgathering Episode 2 on my channel - link in bio 🫶
